Have any of you done a project like this before?

I have seen this put in a frame that is not split into two. I would love to know the specifics of this if anyone has any info.

You write family names on the leaves branching out into different generations. Anyone?

I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for, but I saw this on Studio 5 the other day. It reminds me of the picture you posted. I think they had two different kind of kits to make different family tree things. Good luck.
