I hope that no one finds this inappropriate but I was wondering if anyone sells their extra breast milk. My cousin sells her to a person here in SLC and makes $1/ounce. I am having a baby soon and would be interested in someone who would like to buy my extra breast milk. If you know anyone who needs it, or you have any experience with it please let me know.
Thanks

Wow! I didn’t know you could sell that!

I could have made a fortune way back when…

Actually I think it's very popular. There are babies that can only tolerate mom's milk and mother's who can't produce so they look for mom's who have extra.

I don't know about selling but we used donated breast milk from the milk bank. Thank goodness there is something like this as my oldest would never have made it without it.

I'm not sure how you would really find someone other than word of mouth.. I don't think Utah has any Milk Banks? Ok, Norah posted while I was writing this, so maybe there is one. LOL

I've heard of other people doing this but it's usually recommended you go through a professional place like a 'bank' to make sure the mom's providing the milk are screened properly and have the appropriate equipment to pump in a sanitary way and that they are storing it correctly as well.

Maybe try calling a Nursery at the hospital or something?? Or the NICU if you can get through to them.. see if they accept breastmilk donations and if there are any companies they recommend using (if there are any).

Good luck!

Becki- There is no milk bank in Utah. Mine came from a bank in Denver, which was the closest to us. I also had local friends who donated directly to me to help us out since I was paying about $4 an ounce to have it shipped to us.

Ok, I thought there weren't any. That's great you were able to have friends donate.. the stuff really is liquid gold, huh. lol

So yeah, I'm not sure how you'd go about selling it other than word of mouth.

I wish we had a milk bank here, when I had DS #1 I pumped for 10 days and was getting LOTS of milk before he passed away. I ended up just throwing it away. What a waste. I felt bad doing it, but didn't know anyone who needed it-and I wasn't in the right mind frame to really look too hard. I remember thinking though that if there had been a milk bank I could have donated it there and helped someone.

I am so sorry for your loss, that must have been hard to endure.

Julie - Same here. I pumped for about 6 days and stored everything in the freezer. Had to throw it all away when my baby died and then I was horribly engorged for days following. :sad7:

Hugs to you!

When I had my youngest son, I produced soooo much milk. I had previously had twins, so I am sure that had something to do with it. Anyhow, I called hospitals offering my milk for the ICU babies, but they would not take it! I could hardly believe it because when I lived in San Diego, hospitals would gladly take it, especially for premies. I kept it stored in my freezer for a while and would rotate (throw out) the older stuff hoping that at some point, I would find someone to take the milk, but I never did.

When I had my 2 Preemies the NICU really pushed pumping and breastfeeding. I heard of women who lost their babies donating to the closest center (denver if you are in utah.) They only do it on a donation basis however, and do not pay for milk. Some moms really struggled with breastfeeding (I know I did - I didn't produce enough milk for either of my girls despite my best efforts.) You may try calling the "parent to parent support groups" at NICU's and asking if they know of any new moms that are interested.
