For whatever reason i am feeling the need to add to our family. We already have 2 dogs and 7 kids but i want another small dog. I want something very small and would like to be able to keep her with me when i go in the car. Here is my dilema. I have been looking at chihuahuas and think some of them are very cute. Just don't want anything to yappy. My BIL breeds shih tzus and has offered me a little black and white female for 350 that he would normally sell for 600. I am really debating on which breed i should get. Can anyone give me their experiences with the 2 dogs? I love how soft and friendly the shih tzus are but am kind of afraid at all the grooming i would think needs done.

You may already know this since your BIL breeds them, but shitzu's are pretty high maintenance as far as grooming. They need combed a lot and groomed often too which can get expensive if you don't do it yourself. Just something to think about. I don't know anything about chihuahuas so I can not give any thoughts on them. AND perhaps I should have read to the end of your post! sorry you already know about the grooming! it's my Friday so I am a bit slow!

My family had a part shih-tzu part pameranian (spelling???) and it was the cutest little thing ever! We wanted part of it to be shih-tzu because their fur doesn't shed so we could keep it inside.

Our dog is part chihuahua part terrier (she's the white one in the picture, the black and white one is a rat terrier) and she is very yappy but I don't know if that is the chihuahua part of her or the other part. She needs almost no grooming because her hair is so short so she's pretty low maintenance that way.
Good luck with whatever you pick. Dogs are fun.

Chihuahuas are very cute but very yappy. The shih tzu is alot of grooming so it's sort of down to which can you live with - the grooming or the yapping. They are both way cute though!

we have a shih tzu and a lhasa apso, shih tzu's are very "lick-y" I ahte to hear people chew with their mouth open and its kinda like that ALL DAY! so that is kinda annoying, as far as gromming goes, if you keep them long haired you would have to brush alot, but if you keep them short haired you would have to take them in about once every 5-7 months.
