Moving to VA

We are looking at moving to Northern VA. My husband will be working in Alexandria. It is so expensive to live there though. Any suggestions on where to live? We have four kids. I would like a good school, safe neighborhood etc. I'd love it if my husband could ride either a carpoo/vanpool or metro etc. to work so he can read or whatever at least part of the time. He doesn't mind an hour commute but if possible I'd rather not.

My parents love Loudoun County area. (South Riding, Bremerton, Ashburn Area)

We are in your same situtation. We may be moving there in the next few months. We have been looking around Woodbridge or some place like that. Have you found any good information? I am also looking for affordablility (nothing more than $1800/per month - we'd mostly likely rent), good elementary schools and a safe neighborhood. Any advice/suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks!
