Default Homemade garlic bread recipe, anyone?

How does one make good garlic bread at home? That doesn't require fresh this or that (because who always has fresh stuff)? And that doesn't require free-handing of spices? I'm terrified of the "sprinkle with ____" methods. I always get way over or under-seasoned food. So.....I know that's asking a lot, but does anyone have a good, simple, fool-proof garlic bread recipe? I'd love to try one out!

I'm a sprinkle kind of gal, but I also like to add parm. cheese and mozzarella cheese on top.
But I did google it, and several came up that looked good. Just depends on what you have on hand and what you all like.

Now you have me craving garlic bread, I love love love garlic bread

To keep it simple, I like to use softened butter, (about 1/2 cube) add some crushed garlic (I keep a jar of prepared crushed garlic in my fridge), and whatever else you like (parsley, oregeno, pepper, parmesean cheese, etc) mix it together, and spread.
