Today’s Argument: Getting a newspaper invites lots of additional advertising into the home.

My Opinion: The author makes the point that you may be “compelled” to enter stores you wouldn’t normally enter and purchase items you wouldn’t normally purchase because of the additional advertisements that show up at your home because you are a newspaper subscriber.

I don’t know how you all feel about this argument but I feel that it may be the weakest of the 8. Most couponers are not impulse shoppers. We are the opposite. We are the shoppers who make budgets. We make lists and never enter a store without them. We avoid instant gratification. We are the grown-ups. We are the Moms.

Bottom line – unless there’s a coupon (and I always look – don’t you?), I throw advertisements away.

As for the argument that I may be “compelled” to enter a store I wouldn’t normally visit… well, it’s true! I sometimes do enter stores I don’t regularly shop at to use my coupons. I consider it more of a choice than a mind control, though. I go in, I purchase my coupon item (with cash – unless it’s free!) and I leave. I amaze myself with my self control.
