Reading On A Budget

Bookworm_ReadingCorner

If you’re anything like us, you absolutely love to read. There’s nothing like diving into a good book that is both well written and entertaining. It’s almost like an escape, right? Anyways, one thing that we don’t like about reading is the cost of books. They can be pretty dang expensive and if you’re an avid reader, those costs can add up fast. So, what can you do about it other than quit reading? We have an answer! Use the tips below to get your read on without spending a ton of money. Ready to get started? Good. Scroll down!

eBooks

eBooks are becoming an excitingly popular way to read books. You can read them on tablets, your computer, and on eReaders such as the B&N Nook. Regardless of how you read them, they are typically cheaper than buying the paperback or hard cover versions of your favorite books. In fact, a lot of online stores that specialize in selling eBooks have quite a few that are only 99 cents. On top of that, there are thousands of free eBooks out there.

Library

This may seem like a very old school method to a lot of you but we’re big fans of libraries. The books are free, the environment is soothing, and generally speaking, the staff is very helpful. You have to have a real love of books to work in a library so that’s why we will always recommend it as a good source of cheap reading. In fact, it’s free reading! That is, unless you lose a book in which case you’ll probably be charged a pretty penny for it.

Discover Local Writers

If you know of any local writers, approach them about their work. Chances are, they’d be more than willing to give you a free copy of their latest book in exchange for a little bit of feedback. Not only that but you will be supporting others in your area that have a passion for writing (much like you have a passion for reading). If you don’t know of any writers who are local to you, do a little bit of research and see what you can come up with. There are bound to be at least a few around you but you may just know about these writers yet.

And while these are just a few of the many cheap or free sources of books out there, we realize that there are many more. You have the option of going to used book stores, eBay, thrift stores, pawn shops, and anywhere else that may have books at great prices. Heck, you could even try looking around yard sales or just asking some of your reading buddies if you can borrow a book or two. Regardless of what you do, we genuinely hope that you save money and are still able to read as much as you’d like to. Now, let’s get to reading!

Affordable Magazines You Should Read

Fashion-Magazines

As you may already know, we tend to do things that no one expects from time to time. This is one of those things. Below, you will find a list of magazines that we think you should be subscribed to. We also took special care to make sure that we didn’t mention any magazine that is too expensive or priced unfairly. We genuinely  hope that you get great use out of each and every one of these magazines. Even if you don’t subscribe to any of them, make sure you at least check them out in the store. Ready to get started? Great!

TIME

TIME magazine is one of those magazines that’s practically in every check out lane in the country. Not only do they cover everything from recent history but they release special edition issues (that are a little more expensive) but these issues can turn into big money if you hold on to them for a few years. Definitely consider a subscription to TIME magazine.

National Geographic

National Geographic magazine has been around for decades upon decades and very easily recognized as that “yellow magazine.” People collect them, learn from them, and get tons of entertainment out of them. If you’re ever bored and need an affordable magazine, this may be the one for you. It also works great for those of you that like to learn random facts.

Fangoria

What if you’re a horror movie buff? Fangoria magazine is definitely the magazine for you. It isn’t as heavily circulated as it used to be but we still absolutely love it. It may be a little tough to find but you can purchase a subscription on their website or find them in stores like Barnes and Noble or Books A Million from time to time. That is, if you’re a horror fan.

Men’s Health

If you’re a male and want to get serious about your health, Men’s Health magazine may be a good investment. Not only will you get valuable nutrition advice but you’ll learn a few cool exercises as well as valuable information on the science of health. Best of all, this magazine is in virtually every store in the country whether it’s a retail store or a gas station. So, if you want to learn more about your health as a man, consider buying a subscription to Men’s Health magazine. Still not convinced? Buy a single issue and try it out.

So, those are just a few of the many good magazines out there that are affordable. If you know of any good magazines that don’t cost a ton of money, let us know! We value your feedback and hope that you will help us make the site better by giving us constructive criticism. Now, what are you waiting for? Get out there, research some of these quality magazines, and see which one you think you will like the most. Also, we hope you enjoy!

International Book Week – Read On!

According to many Facebook posts, it’s International Book Week. I’m not sure how far reaching this is because I can’t find many other declarations to celebrate books this week that don’t link back to Facebook. The game their playing is kind of fun and so the Facebook posts got me thinking about books in general.

Reading is my escape. A bubble bath and a good book and I’m in heaven. I’ve always enjoyed reading. I love that words on paper can conjure up images in my mind that I’ve never seen, evoking emotions as my eyes scan over printed words and I internalize them and find meaning there. Reading has always been an experience I loved. Wanting to share this love with my children, we have been reading since they were very little.

Encouraging my kids (all boys) to read 20 minutes a day for school used to be a chore. As long as I read to them when they were little they loved it and I loved it too. As we’d sit down to read we’d snuggle together and indulge in a story. Then they started to grow up and reading became more of a chore. As it was assigned for homework and the task became an individual event, they became even more resistant. For a while I’m sure they classified reading as a waste of time. Suffering through it until the timer ran out and they could be on to greater adventures.

As they have grown and become older they have found things that interest them and in turn read about those things. They began to read series of books. Some of the adventures they used to run outside to seek were now happening in their heads. ( and they liked it!) Suddenly they were having conversations with other kids at school about books they were reading and the love of reading began to develop. Reading has now become a habit and a love of my children.

I guess the moral of my rambling is to all you the mothers out there with young children who find themselves struggling like I did is…. It get’s better. Put books in front of them and encourage them and they will find a place for reading in their lives too.

So to honor International Book Week this is the game being played. Turn to page 52 of the closest book. Read the 5th sentence on the page and enter it in the comments. Ready, go!

“He nodded his thanks and moved to the bow.”
