The Best Ways to Save Money on Back to School

When is school back in session in your area? My kids start back in early September, but I know many kids who head back in mid-August. Even though I still have about 6 weeks til then, I’m all about getting started now so that I might be able to save a little bit of money!! I have three kids, but only 2 in school (middle school and high school) and it gets expensive. If you find yourself stressed about by it too, there are ways that you can save.

Here are some of the best ways to save money on back to school that I always follow:

Spread your shopping out

I try very hard not to do all of my shopping at once. While, yes, I do set and stick to an overall budget, I find it difficult to spend hundreds of dollars at once. For me, it is better to spread the shopping trips out so it’s not such a huge hit at once.

Shop Clearance

I am the queen of clearance and I am not even exaggerating. I NEVER shop full price and I almost always exclusively shop in the clearance section of the store when I do shop. I also like to combine coupon shopping with clearance. For instance, JCPenney often offers $10 off of $25 deals and I always combine the $10 off $25 with the clearance deals I have found. It has gotten me some sweet deals before.

Shop Online

Yes, there are good deals to be found when shopping online, but I have found that the best thing about online shopping for me is that I shop for what I am looking for, buy then I am done. Whereas, when I am shopping in store, I find myself looking at other great deals that I don’t necessarily need so I may spend more than I had expected.

What is your favorite way to save money on back to school shopping?

3 Ways to Save Money School Shopping

I know it feels like school just got out, but before you know it, you will need to be school shopping. If you are like me, you are starting early so that you can save money and get it over with before it gets to be too stressful.

If you are ready to get started, here are 3 Ways to Save Money School Shopping:

Do an audit at home.  What do you have already?  It’s always smart to take an inventory of what you have already so that you don’t buy something and waste money on something that you already have.

Spread out your shopping. Yes, I know it’s only June, but I assure you that you will save money if you go earlier.  This way you have time to buy things when they are on sale instead of grabbing everything at once because you are doing it last minute.  I love summertime because stores often have weekly deep sales on specific items, so you can grab a one or two items each week and save big.

Shop second hand.  When it comes time for clothes shopping, head out to some thrift shops to save big on cute clothes!  I have a teenage daughter that loves to thrift shop and she always has in style clothes. Here’s how we do it.  We hit up Goodwill only on Sunday or Monday (after they rotate in new items) and only buy clothing that is the color tag sale color (meaning that they are half off).  We also shop at high end thrift shops such as Plato’s Closet to get inexpensive, yet high fashion clothes. We also occasionally hit up yard sales in the high price parts of town.  You would be surprised at how cheap people will sell expensive clothes for. A couple of years ago, when MissMe jeans were all the rage, we snagged 3 pair for $1 each!

Hidden Ways to Save Money on Back to School

So, we all now know how to save money on things like clothing and other back to school stuff, but how can you save money on the all of the fees that it takes to actually send your kids back to school?  You know what I mean, registration fees, lunch fees, school sports fees, etc.

Here are several hidden ways to save money on back to school:

  • Check for scholarships.  Depending on your actual need, there may be scholarships available for certain registration fees.
  • Skip the extras.  I just registered my daughter for high school and they charged $30 for a yearbook.  My daughter had been saving up, so she opted to buy it, but don’t forget that this is not a requirement.  I mean, really, how often are your kids going to actually be looking at that yearbook?
  • Make lunches at home.  Unless you qualify for reduced or free lunches, school lunch is quite expensive.  You will save a significant amount of money by making the kids cold lunches at home.
  • Look into reduced sports fees.  It doesn’t matter if your child is playing sports for the school or a different sports program (kids inc, etc), there are often scholarships and reduced fees for families in need. Sometimes the fees will be cut in half, sometimes they will be discounted even more.  Alternatively, they also occasionally allow payment plans.
  • Cut back on new school clothes.  Chances are, your child doesn’t need hundreds of dollars worth of new back to school clothes, maybe cut back on those a little bit to free up other money.

Back to school is expensive enough, there is no need to add more stress to it by stretching your budget beyond its means.  If you are struggling to make ends meet, there are things that you can do to make it easier to afford.

Good luck and happy back to school everyone!

Back to School Time Saving Tips

Public school buses parked in a line with doors open

When school is getting ready to start again, life just gets busy and hectic and it feels like you simply don’t have time for anything.  I have three children, I know the drill. This year though I have a kid going into middle school and one in high school, plus a toddler in tow, I need all the time I can get.

So, if you are like me and you need some help with time management, here are some back to school time savings tips:

  • Make a schedule.  Make a schedule of the things you need to do and plan accordingly.  Combine trips, plan shopping trips together, etc.
  • Shop online.  I’m all for supporting local businesses, but the reality is, online shopping helps you save a lot of time and sometimes a lot of money in general.
  • Meal plan.  Create a meal plan for the week or month ahead.  Planning your meals in advance cuts down on time needed throughout the day.
  • Recruit the kids to help.  I know it seems easier to just do all of the work yourself, but I promise you once you actually hand off some responsibility to the kids, it will start getting easier.  Plus, they need to learn these responsibilities anyway.
  • Get schedules early.  Be sure to get the kids schedules early so that you know exactly what times they will need to arrive at school or the bus stop.

What things have you found to be best at helping you save time when it comes to back to school time?  Time management hasn’t always been my strong suit and I still to this day find that I falter in it from time to time.  I would love to hear any tips and/or pointers that you have found helpful in saving you time.
