4 Tips for Having Fun While Saving Money

Saving money is not always easy, but of course it can be beneficial and fun. I have some simple steps I have found to stretch your budget AND have fun.

#1: Relax. Don’t count each penny you save and worry about how much you save. Does it really matter if this week you saved $1.92 compared to $1.93 on a meal. Yes, every penny matters, but sometimes the amount is so minimal its not crucial. I find this especially true when shopping with coupons, I used to beat myself up if I forgot to had the cashier a coupon. My daughter once dropped a yogurt coupon on the floor and it went under a shelf where I couldn’t get it. I started to freak out!! Then I realized .25 wasn’t worth the stress and likely humiliation of having a hissy fit in the middle of Walmart…..

#2: Budget. Always good advice, sometimes harder to do. This is a rough one for my husband and I. We are learning (after 15 years of marriage) that we need to work together more and not have our own agendas.

#3: Make saving money detective work. If you look at it as money saved as a found treasure, you will find the process exciting! There’s always a new way to save you have yet to discover. Search for it.

#4: Involve your kids in saving. Play games with them that shows them how to use money wisely. We have a board game called Shopping Spree that my daughter loves to play. Another way is to help them earn money save you money by encouraging them to cut coupons. I have heard of families that give the kids a percentage of how much money you save when you use the coupons they cut at the grocery store. For our family I just emphasize that when we save money we have more left over for the fun things. My daughter loves to help organize the coupons.

For me Pinching Your Pennies is a hobby. It’s not a chore, it’s just what we do in our house. It’s very exciting too!

Honey, start the car…START THE CAR!!! Smith’s Coupon Matchup Event (Utah)

Attention, all Utah couponers – whatever you do, if you can squeeze in some time before Tuesday night this week, DO NOT MISS THE SMITH’S DOUBLE COUPON EVENT!!! I haven’t done a shopping trip this awesome since the demise of Albertson’s (may it rest in peace…)! This one was seriously just like the Ikea commercial, I kid you not – well, except for the fact that I was alone and didn’t have my hubs there to man the get-away vehicle, but you get the idea, right?

From now until Tuesday night, Smith’s is having a “double coupon” event – but the double coupon is almost a misnomer. In some ways it’s actually BETTER than double coupon, because any manufacturer’s coupon under $1 is credited as $1 – so for coupons under .50, it’s more than double (because a .25 coupon still gets credited as $1)!

Here’s what Smith’s so generously allowed me to buy for pennies on the dollar this morning:

    (5) Bounty Basics paper towel single roll, 1.09 (.09 after coupon)
    (4) Wacky Mac pasta, on sale 1.25 (.25 after coupon)
    (1) French’s Worcestershire sauce 15oz, on sale 1.59 (.59 after coupon)
    (3) Dawn dish soap, 1.59 (.59 after coupon)
    (1) GM Cheerios cereal, on sale 2.00 (1.00 after coupon)
    (1) Suddenly Salad pasta, on sale 1.00 (FREE after coupon)
    (2) Betty Crocker muffin mix, 2.09 (1.09 after coupon)
    (5) Betty Crocker potatoes, on sale 1.00 (FREE after coupon)
    (4) Satin Care shave gel, 2.36 (1.36 after P&G promo, .36 after coupon)
    (2) Dial Complete foaming hand soap, on sale 1.50 (.50 after coupon)
    (5) Pretzl Flipz, on sale 1.00 (FREE after coupon)
    (5) Yoplait Greek yogurt cups, on sale 1.00 (FREE after coupon)
    (5) SunnyD, on sale 1.29 (.29 after coupon)
    (12) Yoplait Light yogurt cups, on sale .44 (.27 after coupon)
    (10) Totino’s party pizza, on sale .88 (.68 after coupon, .38 after Catalina)
    (4) Kroger Deluxe ice cream, on sale .99
    (2) Banquet BrownN’Serve sausage, 1.99 (.99 after coupon)
    (1) Farmland sausage patties, 2.99 (1.99 after coupon – was SUPPOSED to be on sale for 1.75, didn’t catch it at the register)
    (2) Cheetos Mighty Zingers, on sale 1.67 (.67 after coupon)

    I used:
    (2) .40/6 coupons for reg yogurt [see SS-4/25]
    (5) .25/1 coupons for the potatoes [see SS-3/28]
    (5) .50/1 coupons for the Flipz [see SS-3/28]
    (2) .50/1 coupons for the muffin mix [see SS-3/28]
    (5) .25/1 coupons for the paper towels [see P&G-5/2 – item NOT part of P&G promo]
    (2) 1.00/1 coupons for the Cheetos [see SS-5/9]
    (3) .25/1 coupons for the Dawn [see P&G-5/2 – item NOT part of P&G promo]
    (2) .35/1 coupons for the Dial [see RP-3/7]
    (1) .50/1 coupon for the Worcestershire sauce [see SS-5/9]
    (1) .40/1 printable coupon for the Suddenly Salad [see GroupA – also ended up getting a .35 e-coupon from Shortcuts that I didn’t know I had on my card, so this one ended up better than free]
    (5) .25/1 coupons for the SunnyD [see SS-5/9]
    (4) .50/1 coupons for the WackyMac [see SS-5/16]
    (2) 1.00/5 coupons for the Totino’s [see SS-3/28 or SS-4/18]
    (4) .55/1 coupons for the shave gel [see P&G-5/2 – item IS part of P&G promo]
    (1) .55/1 printable coupon for the Cheerios [see GroupA or GroupB]
    (2) .35/1 coupons for the Banquet sausage [from inside previous boxes]
    (1) .50/1 coupon for the Farmland sausage [peelie on package]

I then got $4 off for the 4 shave gels (P&G promo), and I got (1) $3 Catalina for the Totino’s pizzas. I also got (2) $1 Catalina coupons as well, but I’m not entirely sure what they were from (I think they were from the GM/Betty Crocker stuff).

Total: $31.81 + $5 in Catalina coupons good off next purchase

My receipt was seriously over 3 feet long, and it says I saved $89.28 – $52.35 of that was from the coupons and the coupon promo! I also ended up with 86 rewards points and 52 bonus points, for a total of 138. Had I really been with it, I would have used my double points coupon that came with my last rewards certificate, but I left it (and the $10 rewards certificate) at home – AGAIN…GRR! 😉

For the full list of amazing deals and coupon matchups, see this post at PYP! Remember, the coupon matchup only runs through Tuesday, May 18th.

    WD-40 — WOW!

I was talking with a neighbor about duct tape. We were actually joking about how it can be used for pretty much anything. She told me the other item she can’t live without in her home is WD-40. I had no clue that it had so many uses.

So I decided to find out more about WD-40. Water Displacement #40. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a “water displacement” compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. I have always just thought it was for squeaky door hinges.

Here are some of the uses:

    1. Protects silver from tarnishing.

    2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.

    3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.

    4. Gives floors that ‘just-waxed’ sheen without making it slippery.

    5. Keeps flies off cows…… that’s a funny one that I am not sure I personally will try

    6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.

    7. Removes lipstick stains.

    8. Loosens stubborn zippers.

    9. Untangles jewelry chains.

    10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.

    11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.

    12. Keeps ceramic/terracotta garden pots from oxidizing.

    13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.

    14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots. I have even been using it on my windshield.

    15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.

    16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.

    17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes – of course that’s the one I knew before!

    18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor!

    19. Removes dead bugs from your car.

    20. Gives a the swing set slide a shine for a super fast slide.

    21. Removes gum from carpet, hair, or dog fur (yes I have tried that)

    22. Removes crayon from carpet (be sure to test WD-40 on low visibility area of carpet before using)

The claim is that there is nothing in WD-40 that will harm a person, but I just want to say if you are using inside your home — open a window because it certainly doesn’t smell great.

Shelf Reliance – Safeguarding Your Identity and Posessions in an Emergency

Hello again from Shelf Reliance! This week, we’ll be addressing identity protection and item documentation. For folks who take their credit seriously, few things could be worse than learning that your financial identity has been compromised. Emergency situations, when people are frantic, stressed, and focused on other things, present a perfect opportunity for burglars and identity thieves to strike while everyone’s looking the other way. And not all of them will be as obvious as this guy:

When planning for an emergency situation, there are four vital areas that must be taken into account. These include identification items, financial information, material possessions located in your home, and family mementos that are irreplaceable.

Identification documents should be stored in a fire-proof safe. These include social security cards, birth certificates, military papers, financial institution information, visas, school transcripts, passports, and other personal documents. Although your driver’s license can’t be stored in your fire-proof safe, you should make sure you know its location. Should you need to travel with these documents, protecting them in waterproof pouches is a good idea.

Taking an inventory of your home is also an important emergency preparedness step. To ensure a fair settlement with your insurance company, make a detailed list of all the valuable items in your home. Supplementing your list with a video of your belongings as well as any receipts you have is also a good idea.

Making sure your finances are in check is another great way to prepare for an emergency. Make a document containing your account numbers, vital financial information, etc. and store it in a safe or safety deposit box. Also, keep enough cash in your emergency supplies to last at least 72 hours.

There are many items such as family mementos that aren’t realistic to store with your emergency supplies. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to take those into account and keep them in a place where they can be easily transported if an emergency calls for evacuation.
