Are you still a little bit grossed out from reading yesterday’s blog about germy things you touch every day? I know I am! Was I right when I said there are quite a lot of them and if you think too hard about them all, you just might start taking hand sanitizer everywhere you go? I bet at least a few of you put hand sanitizer in your purse or car after reading yesterday’s blog! Are you ready to look for another germy thing you touch every day?
We talked about drinking fountains, restroom doors, phones, keyboards, money, shopping carts and even cans of soda. But there are so many more things that are germy and I think most of us don’t think of them that way at all. But once you do think of them, I bet you shudder just a little bit!
Pets
We all love our pets. Some people even think of them as part of the family. But have you ever thought of your pet as another germy thing you touch every day? I know some people who kiss their cat or let their dog lick their face. Popular rumor that pet’s mouths have few germs just are not true. If you look past their mouths to their feet, rear ends and fur you will find so many more germs. Our pets may be our best friends but they are full of germs!
Stair railings
Some of us just skip up and down stairs like they aren’t even there but most of us hold onto the stair railing as we go up or down stairs. All of those people on the stairs equals all of those hands on the railings which then equals all of those germs on the railings. Eeeewwww! The railing on stairs is supposed to keep us safe but it is another germy thing you touch every day.
Gas pumps
While most of us don’t actually touch one of these every day, have you ever thought about a gas pump handle as another germy thing you touch every day? Think about all of the germs on that handle. Or don’t… it is pretty nasty to think about!
Purses and wallets
This is one of those “another germy thing you touch every day” things that has actually made the news recently. Studies into the germs on the bottom of purses are shocking. When you think about all of the germy places that you set your phone, maybe it becomes less shocking. Wallets hold that very dirty germy thing – money. Lots of germs in a place many people touch many times a day.
Toothbrush
This is another germy thing you touch every day makes me feel a bit ill if I think about it too hard. We put our toothbrushes in our mouths. If the toothbrush is covered in germs, that means you put all of those germs in your mouth. Gag! Keep those toothbrushes tucked away in a cabinet or clean drawer if you want to cut down on the germs you put in your mouth.
Have anything to add to this germy list – another germy thing you touch every day? Let us know – we love to hear from you!

The dryer signals that familiar buzz, the clothes are dry. You grab the laundry basket and head to the dryer to take the laundry out. As you begin to take the laundry out of the dryer, you notice something wrong, something that shouldn’t be there. Then you see it again and again. Your heart races as you begin to realize you are seeing it everywhere, on piece of laundry after piece of laundry. There is ink everywhere, a pen has gone through the laundry. Your heart sinks and you wonder how much of the laundry is ruined, or how much of the laundry can be saved. How do you get ink stains out of clothing?
I’m sure there are many of you who have had a moment like this. I have had a couple of moments like this, in fact I am pretty sure I wrote that first paragraph straight from recent memory. No matter how we try, no matter how much we check the pockets of those jeans and shake out all of those pairs of pants, the dreaded ink pen still makes its way into the washer and dryer. If you are like me, you never catch it until you are pulling the laundry out of the dryer. Then you ask yourself, or anyone who will listen, “How do you get ink stains out of clothing?”
There are quite a few answers to the question, “How do you get ink stains out of clothing?” There are all of the old wives tales that we’ve all heard and even a few new ones. Two super important points, remember to test the fabric for colorfastness and dab at the ink stain, never rub. Here are just a few of the ways to get ink stains out of clothing:
Laundry soap
This old standby is a favorite for many people who are trying to get out ink stains. Dab at the stain using a small amount of laundry soap. This is the ink stain removal method I have personally had little success with but there are others who really like it.
Hair spray
Another favorite for people trying to get ink stains out of clothing is hairspray. Spray hairspray onto the stain and let it dry before putting in the washing machine. The chemicals in the spray will help to break down the ink, which will make it easier to dissolve in the wash.
Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is another solution to try to get ink stains out of clothing. Dab a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto the ink stain. Start blotting the stain with a clean cloth and continue until no ink stain remains. Rinse the clothing thoroughly when you are done.
Hand sanitizer
This ink stain remedy works just like rubbing alcohol because it contains alcohol. Follow the same steps as you would with rubbing alcohol.
Nail polish remover
This ink stain remedy makes me a little nervous. I would try it only on strong fabrics, and as a last resort. Remember to test it on an inconspicuous part of the fabric.

Be honest, we’ve all done it. You open your dishwasher only to be met with an awful smell. How can something that is so clean smell so bad? Or maybe you open your dishwasher and can’t miss the film that coats everything. How can something that is so clean look so dirty? Or maybe you open the dishwasher and the dishes just don’t seem clean. How can something that is so clean leave such a mess? I think we have all asked ourselves at least one of these questions. Dishwashers should be clean but like so many other things in our houses, they just get dirty. Is it time to clean your dishwasher?
Time to clean the dishwasher? Really? Of course! Those things get dirty, stinky and grimy. If your dishwasher is not looking, smelling and cleaning it’s best, it is time to clean the dishwasher. There are lots of tips and tricks to cleaning a dishwasher. They range from easy to hard and cheap to expensive. Let’s talk about some of the ways to clean the dishwasher.
Check your filter
Did you know that your dishwasher has a filter? There are lots of people who don’t know this and subsequently lots of filters that don’t get cleaned. If you haven’t checked or cleaned your dishwasher’s filter, you may be in for a nasty surprise. It can be ugly in there if it has been left unattended. If you have a weak stomach or strong gag reflex you may need someone else to do this for you – I’m semi-serious. Dishwasher filters are usually on the bottom of the dishwasher, near the middle. Food, debris, bits of wrappers and plastic – there are usually lots of icky bits down in there. Many filters are very easy to clean. If yours looks hard to clean or reach, a quick online search will usually point you to directions for your exact dishwasher. Checking and cleaning the filter is a very important step when you want to clean the dishwasher.
Buy a dishwasher cleaner
There are a lot of different kinds of dishwasher cleaners out there. When it is time to clean the dishwasher, a quick trip down the soap aisle will give you lots of options. I’ll admit to trying most of these. Some work great and others, not so great. A quick search of dishwasher cleaners on Amazon will show you lots of the options and you’ll be able to read reviews too. If you want to buy a readymade dishwasher cleaner, it is a great place to start.
Use a homemade cleaning method
There are lots of ways to clean your dishwasher with ingredients that you have around the house. Another quick online search will provide you with lots of ideas. Some people use white vinegar or baking soda. Others use bleach and yet others use Borax. Some people even recommend unusual options like lemon Kool-Aid or Tang. Yes, you read that right, those are drink mixes. The citric acid is great at cleaning the inside of your dishwasher.
Use a rinse aid
Once your dishwasher is clean, use a rinse aid like Jet Dry to help keep the inside of your dishwasher clean. There are lots of other rinse aids and lots of store brands that do a great job.

Have a tube of toothpaste sitting in your bathroom? I bet you do! Have you got multiple tubes? If you are at all like me, the answer will be absolutely, at least two or three. Have you ever thought or wondered about using toothpaste for something other than brushing your teeth? I’ve got a favorite other use for it and recently learned of quite a few more. Check out these crazy uses for plain white tooth paste, some of them are funny and some are genius!
Fill holes in the wall
This is a time tested use for toothpaste and is one of the most popular crazy uses for toothpaste. Plain white toothpaste works great for filling in little holes in your walls that may be left when you rearrange the décor. Remember that less in more when doing this and don’t overfill the holes.
Remove scuffs from your shoes
Have scuffs and marks on your favorite shoes? Another of the crazy uses for toothpaste can take care of that for you! Use a small dab of toothpaste and a damp rag to gently rub the scuffs off of your shoes. Remember to rub softly so you don’t damage your shoe.
Clean your jewelry
Use a small dab of toothpaste and an old toothbrush to make your jewelry sparkle. Rinse the jewelry well so no toothpaste is left in grooves. I think this is one of the best crazy uses for toothpaste.
Clean your iron
Is the face of your iron getting a bit dirty? Use a small dab of toothpaste and damp rag to make your iron look like new. (Personally I hate ironing so my iron looks new – haha!) If you try this one of the crazy uses for toothpaste, let me know how it works.
Clean and deodorize baby bottles
This is a great way to get that stinky and sour smell out of baby bottles. I always hated the idea of leaving a soapy residue in the bottles so toothpaste seems like a great idea. Crazy uses for toothpaste are for young and old it seems so dab a bit of toothpaste on the bottle brush and scrub the smells away.
Clean the bathroom
The mild abrasive in toothpaste makes it a great choice when cleaning the bathroom sink, faucet, mirror and other surfaces. This useful seems smart and one of the less crazy uses for toothpaste. Dab a little toothpaste on a damp rag or old toothbrush and make everything shine.
Clean crayon marks from walls
Crayons marks on walls, if you have kids you’ve probably had them. Just like in the bathroom, the mild abrasive in toothpaste makes it a great choice when cleaning walls. Use a small dab of toothpaste and a damp rag to gently scrub the marks off of your walls.
Remove water marks from furniture
Just like the other uses, the mild abrasive in toothpaste makes it a great choice when cleaning water marks from your furniture. Use a small dab of toothpaste and a damp rag to gently scrub the water marks off of your furniture. Use a furniture polish after the area is dry.
