World’s Largest Pork Producer Shutdown Due to Largest COVID-19 Cluster in US

One of the largest pork processing plants in the nation has closed its doors recently. On April 12th, Smithfield Foods announced that their Sioux Falls, SD Facility would remain closed until further notice.

With close to 1,000 cases of confirmed COVID-19 in the county, Smithfield Foods’ meat processing plant in Minnehaha County in Sioux Falls, SD is now being considered the largest coronavirus hotbeds in the United States. To put this in perspective, the entire state of South Dakota has only 1,311 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The chain of events that led to the closure is a little disconcerting, to say the least. According to the company itself, Smithfield Foods offered a “$500 Responsibility Bonus” to its employees working during the coronavirus pandemic. However, several employees have said that they would only get the bonus if they did not miss any work during the month of April.  This bonus was offered even after employees in the South Dakota plant tested positive for COVID-19 in late March.

Smithfield Foods then planned to shutter the plant for three days, from April 11th through April 13th.

Smithfield Foods stated that they instituted a “series of stringent and detailed protocols that follow the strict guidance of the CDC“, including instructing workers who tested positive for COVID-19 not to report to work and contact a healthcare provider so they could be quarantined with pay.  The company has also stated that they “enhanced the cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched objects and surfaces and are continuing to stress the importance of personal hygiene” in addition to taking the following precautions:

  • Added extra hand sanitizing stations
  •  Boosted personal protective equipment
  •  Continuing to stress importance of personal hygiene
  •  Enhanced cleaning and disinfection
  •  Expanded employee health benefits
  •  Implementing thermal scanning
  •  Increased social distancing in common areas
  •  Installed plexiglass barriers
  •  Restricting all nonessential visitors

The April 12th announcement to close came after the state’s Governor and the Sioux Falls mayor sent a letter to the facility to close for a minimum of two weeks so the facility could clean and allow ill employees to recover.

On April 15th, Smithfield Foods announced that due to the fact that a “small number of employees at both plants have tested positive for COVID-19” it would also be closing two more facilities:

  • Cudahy, Wisconsin (Dry sausage and bacon plant)
  • Martin City, Missouri (Spiral and smoked ham plant)

Smitfield Foods considered to be the world’s largest pork product producer. It processes meat products from popular brands like:

  • Smithfield®
  • Eckrich®
  • Nathan’s Famous®
  • Farmland®
  • Armour®
  • Farmer John®
  • Kretschmar®
  • John Morrell®
  • Cook’s®
  • Gwaltney®
  • Carando®
  • Margherita®
  • Curly’s®
  • Healthy Ones®
  • Morliny®
  • Krakus®
  • and Berlinki®

What does this mean for consumers?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumers probably do not have to worry about coming into contact with the virus through purchasing or consuming meat or other food products.

According to the FDA,

Currently there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19.

Unlike foodborne gastrointestinal (GI) viruses like norovirus and hepatitis A that often make people ill through contaminated food, SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, is a virus that causes respiratory illness. Foodborne exposure to this virus is not known to be a route of transmission.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

But, what about food shortages?

As of March 17th, the FDA states that there are no nationwide shortages of food. That may be hard to believe for some, based on the shelves at their local supermarkets. However, much of the panic buying my be regional, and doesn’t necessarily translate into an entire nationwide shortage of food.

We live in a somewhat uncertain and frightening time, though. It doesn’t necessarily mean that we may not have an issue getting certain food products in the future.

Meat shortages due to coronavirus are some of the biggest concerns on consumers’ minds right now. With the closure of the Smithfield Foods’ plants across the nation, we may be looking at the possibility of certain brands of meat products becoming scarce for a time.

Smithfield Foods CEO Kenneth Sullivan stated “it is impossible to keep our grocery stores stocked if our plants are not running.” The Sioux Falls Smithfield Foods plant provides 4% to 5% of the pork in the United States alone. This closure combined with the handful of other meat processing plant closures recently, and consumers could find it a bit harder to find their favorite meal time proteins on supermarket shelves.

Other meat processing plant closures include:

  • Tyson Foods (Columbus Junction, Iowa)
  • National Beef Packing (Tama, Iowa)
  • JBS USA (Souderton, Pennsylvania)
  • JBS USA (Greeley, Colorado – Reduced Production)
  • Cargill Meat Solutions (Hazelton, Pennsylvania)

The closure of meat processing facilities may not be the only thing that could lead to a possible meat shortage either. When news of meat processing plants shutting down starts making the rounds, it could trigger more panic buying and stockpiling among consumers. (Toilet paper flashbacks anyone?)

So, where does that leave consumers who might be having trouble finding meat now or in the future?

We improvise! Start looking into meatless meal options, just in case.  Black beans, for instance, can be a great substitute for some meats and are packed with protein. When seasoned and prepared well, beans of any sort can make a great substitute for meat in almost any meal! And, let’s not forget salads and fresh veggies. Nothing beats a yummy salad, and it’s good for you!

Bottom line? No matter what happens, we are NOT alone and we WILL get through this! Things might get tough at time, but that doesn’t mean that we need to go to extremes. Communities need to pull together and think of each other at  time like this. While fear and panic may make us feel like we need to buy the whole shelf of grocery items, common sense and common decency should reign us in right now. Buy what you need, for sure, and even stock up on some essentials.

Think twice, though, before taking more than you need, especially if it will cause shortages in your local stores. Remember that panic buying and hoarding are some of the biggest reasons for empty shelves in our local supermarkets.

Finally, a note about the origins of Smithfield Foods and it’s products…

There are several posts swirling about on social media claiming that Smithfield Foods is a “Chinese company” and that their products come from China. This is only partially true.

Smithfield Foods is an American meat-processing company based in Virginia. Shareholders of Smithfield Foods, however, did vote to approve a partnership with a publicly traded Hong Kong company back in 2013.

The reason for the partnership, though, may not be what some consumers believe. The Hong Kong company is not looking to offload Chinese pork to the United States. Instead, they are looking to import American meat to China, due to rising production cost and quality concerns.

So, does what does mean for the pork products sold in the United States? It’s pretty simple. According to the Smithfield website

Smithfield has not, does not, and will not import any products from China to the United States. No Smithfield products come from animals raised, processed, or packaged in China. All our U.S. products are made in one of our nearly 50 facilities across America. These products are produced in compliance with the strict standards and regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal and state authorities.

Hopefully, the points brought up in this post can set your mind at ease regarding a number of concerns. Now, we want to hear from you! Meat shortage or no, what are your favorite meatless meal go-tos?

Are You Prepared to Evacuate Your Home? Here’s How I Plan to Get Out Quickly With Our Essentials!

We’ve talked about 72 hour kits in the past and if you missed those you can still check them out over here. But what if you need to leave your home? What if you’re asked to evacuate and given a time limit to get out? What are you going to grab? Have you thought about what’s most important? How can the kids help? Will you ever return? Are you READY?

For years I’ve been working on our boxes. What do I mean by that? Well, I’ve put together lists of boxes that are numbered. Each box has a name and is ranked most important on down. So in an emergency I’ll start with box number 1 and make my way down the list until I’ve either grabbed everything we need or ran out of time. It really is that simple and although it seems overwhelming to think about, it will give you peace of mind with it comes it an emergency.

So what are these boxes you’re asking? Don’t worry I’ll get to the break down but first I want to you realize and think about each box. Use what you have right now and don’t worry to much about each box. BUT, everything needs to fit in your car or whatever vehicle you’ll be leaving with. If you only have a smaller car, make sure you pack tight, with smaller boxes or even combine boxes. Gather your boxes first, then while they’re still empty, make sure you can fit them all in the back. Over time you can purchase better quality boxes like those that are waterproof and have lockable lids because cardboard will break down. We also use boxes that are different in color than anything else we have. That way it’s quick to spot. So with all that said, here are my first 5 boxes!

Box 1: 72 Hour Kits
Hopefully you’ve been gathering your 72 hour kit items already and close to having this box done. While they might not be in boxes that’s OK! This should have all your essentials items and when you don’t have much time to grab stuff, these are the first things you should go for. For a great list of everything you should have in your 72 hour kits head here.

Box 2: The Office Binder
This is one of the most important to have with you and we keep ours close to our 72 hour kits but safe enough someone can’t break in and find it very easily because it has our whole life in there. I’ll link you to the binder we have, it’s perfect for organizing all our documents as well as has room for a few extra office items. Here’s what we have inside:

Vital Documents:
Birth Certificates
Passports
Immunization Records
CASH – in small bills
Copy of will, living trust, power of attorney etc
Medical Information (including prescriptions)
military & church papers
diplomas and transcripts
marriage certificates
adoption papers
proof of citizenship
current family photo
Pet records

Insurance Documents:
homeowners insurance policy
auto insurance policy
life insurance policy
medical insurance policy
pictures and lists of all your personal belongings for insurance (we also have a flash drive with a video of it all)

Financial Documents:
copies of your credit cards front and back
bank statements
retirement/social security statements
internet passwords (banking, personal work etc)
utility statements
work/tax documents that would be difficult to replace
deeds to properties
titles to cars, boats, etc
warranty information

There might be a lot to this “box” but it’s all important information you’ll want on hand and easy to find. Plus it shouldn’t cost you much to put this together. Just make your copies, print your documents and gather all your important information.

Box 3: The Car
This one is easy because really you should have a car kit in your car at all times. It’s everything you’d need to maintain your vehicle while on a long car ride. A lot of those car kits you see in-store carry your essentials but here’s a good list of things you should try to have in this box.

  • Jumper cables
  • Work Gloves
  • Carpet Square (or foam pad)
  • Milti-Tool/Knife
  • Tire Guage
  • Tire Inflator (make sure it’s good quality, ours broke once right out of the box)
  • Breaker Bar
  • Tow Rope or chain
  • Flashlight
  • Rags or paper towels
  • 2 Quarts Oil
  • Ice Scraper
  • Cell Phone Charger
  • Small Bills (hidden)

This is a simple list. You can get more advanced and have even more tools to fix problems that arise like pliers, impact driver, sockets and more. Start with your basics and grow from there. Also note, the change in weather may require additional equipment. If you have the room and can keep them in your car, I recommend have tire chains as well as something to help if you get stuck.

Box 4: Nuclear Box
This isn’t one I enjoy talking about and gives me the most anxiety but the more I study and read the more I feel prepared, just in case. There’s very little in this box but it’s close to the top for good reason. If you remember way back when the tsunami and nuclear power plants issues that happened in Japan you’ll remember the shortage and how difficult it was to find Potassium lodate (sort of like how it is to find toilet paper right now) So right now is a good time to stock up on this for your family. Other essentials in this box:

Box 5: Water Box
I hope you have some form of water in your 72 hour kits (we have those water bottles that purify water as we drink it) but if you have extra time to grab essentials, grab extra water. They recommend 5-10 gallons of water per person. This can get heavy so keep that in mind. I found I can life a 5 gallon jug by myself so that’s how we store ours. You can also get water bottle packs if that’s easier to store and move for you. Do what you can to get that water into your car.

Ok that’s all I’m going to leave you with right now. It will give you a good start and you’ll have plenty to do for this week! I promise I won’t leave you hanging though for to long. Next week I’ll post the rest of our boxes and let you know what the kids are responsible for.

**A big thanks to I Get Ready for a lot of the tips and ideas in this article.

5 Things People Reused During the Great Depression!

With how different things have been since Covid 19 took off it’s had me thinking. How was it back in the great depression and what can we learn from history? Because we know, history repeats itself. After doing a little research I wanted to share what I’ve learned and what people reused during the great depression!

  • Kitchen Scraps – this was a little bit of a given but really look around the next time you make dinner (or any other meal). What are you tossing every time you’re cooking? Those egg shells, chicken bones, stale bread (or even the bread butts in our house) all might be getting tossed out now but each of those items can be used for other things. So really think before you just toss things.
  • Magazines – although this was a little different I remember reading someone’s comment on the shortage of toilet paper and how grandma would always have an old magazine in the out house to use as toilet paper. Now please, do not flush magazine pages down your toilets but thing about how you can use magazines before you toss them. They’re great learning tools for your kids practicing their ABC’s, or build something out of the pages.
  • Soap – you quite possibly could already be doing this but with your liquid soap, get every last use out of it by adding and diluting it with water. Or if you use soap bars, when they become smaller you can melt them down together and make a whole new bar. Don’t let those little bits go to waste.
  • Clothing – many times we use hand me downs for our kids but once the reach the end what do you do with them? Save the string and elastic bands out of the articles of clothing that have it. And don’t forget the buttons. I remember grandma always had a jar of buttons saved and used them to mend old clothing if one went missing. You could use them for so many other things as well like counting trackers while teaching school, bingo markers and craft projects. We’d also make jean blankets out of jeans that have to many whole to repair.
  • Jars & Containers – guys, this has been big in our house lately. I can’t tell you how many cottage cheese containers and egg cartons we go through. But we’ve been saving them for fun craft projects as well as I’ve started my own active yeast in one too and planted vegetable starters! These never got thrown out during the great depression.

What have you found you’re doing differently now with the change that’s going on? Are you saving what you can and re-purposing items?

COVID-19 Supplies Prioritized for Hospitals & Government Organizations to Purchase with No Markup!

Hats off to Amazon for doing what they can to help in this time of crisis! They are limiting access to COVID-19 supplies by making the most needed ONLY available for hospitals and government agencies. Government agency eligibility includes all 50 states and the three federal agencies leading the nationwide COVID-19 response, specifically the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security and Department of Defense. This effort will help keep the supplies in the hands of those who need them and out of the hands of hoarders and resellers. What a good idea!

We are doing our part to help spread the word. There are so many hospitals, clinics, providers and more who need help finding the needed supplies. Please pass this info on to those you think may need it and who fit these qualifications. Spread the good. Love your neighbors!

Easter Egg Hunts Your Kids Will LOVE!

Well I think we’ve all realized by now that we’ll be celebrating Easter while quarantined. Which means no public Easter egg hunts and for many of us, no family gatherings filled with food and celebration! So I wanted to put together a list of some fun ways you can throw your own Easter Egg hunt at your house and still make things special and fun this year!

  1. No Treats Just Rewards – this is a great and easy to put together Easter egg hunt which involves avoiding the store if you already have eggs on hand. Simple fill out slips of paper (with or without the kids help) with rewards they can “cash in” this month! So 15 extra minutes of tv time, or stay up late one night. There so many fun rewards the kids will love hurrying to find.
  2. Relay Race – get involved yourself with this one! Split into teams then went both are ready, you’ll send one person from your team to go look for an egg. They’ll run back once they’ve found one and tag the next teammate until all the eggs are found.
  3. Reverse Rolls – have the kids hide the eggs this year and see how long it takes mom and dad to find them. The kids are going to laugh and love this just as much as the adults looking!
  4. Spell Your Name – Have the kids find all the eggs that will make up their name. You can make this easy or more difficult for each age. Simple take a sharpie marker and write each letter on the outside of the egg, fill it with treasures and hide them.
  5. In a Row – This is like a mix of memory and counting. Number your eggs 1 through 10 (or how ever many you want to use) and hide them around the house or the yard. Then have the kids collect the eggs in order! They can work as a team or on their own (simple use different color eggs for each kid to make things easier if hunting on their own).

Don’t forget to checkout the other awesome egg hunt ideas we’ve posted in the past. They each have lots more ideas you can use this year!

Reschedule Your Disneyland Trip for FREE With Get Away Today!

Hey there Get Away today customers! As you probably already know, the Disneyland Resort has extended their closure until further notice

If you booked a travel package through Get Away Today, though, no worries!

Get Away Today is waiving all rescheduling fees for travel this year and into 2021. If you need to reschedule, call an agent at 855-GET-AWAY (9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday) or send them a direct message on Facebook or Instagram any time. Agents are responding to messages and trying to get everyone taken care of as quickly as possible, although, they are trying to help customers with travel scheduled in the next few days first.

If you purchased the Kids Spring ticket special, which was originally valid through May 21 of this year, the travel dates have been extended through December 15, 2020. The entirety of the ticket needs to be used by this date, and it will no longer be valid after December 15, 2020.

Now, the big question on some of your minds has to be “when is a good time to reschedule?” Since it’s almost impossible to know when Disneyland will reopen and we can all travel freely, there’s really no good answer. But, I’m thinking that an end of summer trip before school starts back up in the fall sounds like a great way to blow off some steam when this all blows over. Halloween Time and Holiday celebrations at Disneyland are also extraordinarily magical times as well!

Get Away Today is also booking new Disney Vacations at the moment too! They offer some great Layaway Plans with flexible payment options. Put down just $175 and you can make your own payment schedule for travel through 2021, and the final payment will be due just seven days prior to your travel dates!
