Couple Date Nights You’ve Got to Try During the Holidays

It’s the holiday season, which means date night could be put on the back burner while you are busy hosting  parties and buying gifts. However, the holiday season is one of the most magical times of the year to go on dates and take advantage of those holiday events that only take place during this time of year. Here are a few ideas that you definitely will want to try this holiday season.

Active Date Night: My husband and I love to be active so having a date night where I can run around or throw an axe is right up our alley. For an active date try out Axe Throwing, Top Golf, Ice Skating, City Scavenger Hunts, paint ball, swimming or a new dance class.

Intellectual Date Night: Use your brains! Some times as a stay at home mom I feel my brain is not being in use, so going to an Escape room is super fun. This is a fun date to invite some friends on. The more the merrier…and hopefully will help you escape. Other fun intellectual date nights could include: night at the Opera, or check out your local symphony. These are so fun during the holidays.

Creative Date Night: Use your creativity and go to a paint night where you actually get to paint a scene. We recently did this and I was totally out of my comfort zone, but it ended up being a date night favorite. Other creative date nights could be: local musical plays, glass studios, ceramics, or take a cooking class at local restaurant.

For the Foodies. I love trying new places to eat. My husband and I get excited when we hear new restaurants opening near us. During the holidays, many expensive restaurants have deals or coupons that you can use. If you enjoy trying to new places then this is the time to do it. Also, check your local restaurants websites on Black Friday and see what offers they have. Many will give you extra money for your gift card purchase.

Holiday Specials. If you love holiday music then be sure to check your local event venues and see who is on their schedule for November and December. Most of them will have local as well as popular artists that are singing or playing Christmas music. You could also check for local Christmas sing a longs near you.

For all of the date ideas above, be sure to check out Groupon and Living Social in the city near you. These sites have a tab called “Things to Do” or “Activities.” You might just find a few new date nights listed with great prices. Go on a date this holiday season, it might be the best one yet.

Black Friday 2019: Use These 7 Tips to Help You Save the Most Money

This year Black Friday ads and deals are already popping up, are you ready? It may be a little overwhelming on where to shop and how to get the best deals when there are SO many out there. Here is a list of tips on how to save the most during your Black Friday shopping.

  1. Make a list. You can’t start your shopping unless you know what you are shopping for. Have your whole family write down their lists as well. Be sure to include gifts you need to buy for in-laws and neighbors. Once your list is written down, you are ready to shop!
  2. Compare Stores for Best Deals. This is the overwhelming part, but have no fear. Freebies2Deals will be posting their Best of the Best Black Friday deals soon where you have all those hots items compared with the BEST price listed. This way you won’t have to take the time comparing each store! So check back next week.
  3. Start Shopping NOW!  Today and tomorrow, November 8th and 9th, 2019, Target and Best Buy are offering a lot of their Black Friday deals early. This is the time to grab these items. Some might be selling out, so move fast when you find an item that is at Black Friday price or BETTER than Black Friday price.
  4. Watch for Amazon Lightning Deals.  These are HOT and so fun! Amazon has deals that are set to go live at pre-determined times, which means you can look ahead to see when they will go live and then add specific deals to your “Watched Deals” category. You can bookmark this page for ALL Lightning deals.  Plus, if you are an Amazon Prime Member you can get early access to most Lightening Deals. This gives you 30 extra minutes to shop the deal before the general public can shop it. If you aren’t an Amazon Prime Member, you can get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime here.
  5. Use Coupon Codes to Save More. Be sure to check the main page of each store when you are shopping for extra ways to save money. There might be coupon codes that will give you extra percentages off. One HOT deal that you need to take advantage of is the Target Toy coupon where you text the word TOY to 827438 on your phone to get a coupon code for 25% off.  This coupon code works through November 23rd, 2019. It  can work on Black Friday prices too, so be sure to check that out.
  6. Take Advantage of FREE Shipping. During Black Friday you shouldn’t have to pay for shipping. So watch for coupon codes on stores main pages or purchase minimums. Most stores will be offering FREE shipping anyway, but just be careful you aren’t paying any extra for that. Every cent counts!
  7. Be Quick! You’ve probably experienced Black Friday where you have all of the items in your cart, just to find out that when you check out half of your items are already out of stock. That can be frustrating! There are limited number of items for just about every Black Friday deal. So, when you are online and ready to purchase your items, be quick and check out fast.

How to Make a Christmas Countdown Chain Using Your Halloween Candy

Now that Halloween is over, do you have a TON of candy?  What do you do with it? How do you minimize the intake of sugar for your kids? Here is a great way to solve all of your questions- Make a Christmas Countdown Chain! This chain seriously saves me from kid tantrums and tears. Instead of them asking every 10 minutes if they can have another piece of candy, they know that they get one piece a day and each day means it’s closer to Christmas! It does take some time, but the kids can help you out!  Here’s how you do it:

Supplies you need:
Plastic Wrap
Ribbon or Yarn- cut into strips long enough to tie
Scissors
Halloween Candy (# depending on when you start your chain-days to Christmas.)

Directions:

Stretch your Plastic Wrap out and keep it straight. Don’t cut it off until you are completely done. Tie Ribbon on the end and add in your first piece of candy. Next you’ll want to wrap the plastic wrap around the candy and twist the end a few times so the candy doesn’t fall out. Then add another ribbon. Repeat this step until you have all of your pieces in your plastic wrap.  End the chain with another ribbon-twisting before you tie. That’s it!

Tips:
#1: If you have more than one child, consider using different colors of ribbon or yarn for each kid.  That way they know which chain is theirs just by looking at the color.

#2: Remember to twist the wrap after each candy, otherwise they tend to fall out.

#3 If you don’t have enough pieces to go all the way until Christmas, consider going until Thanksgiving or even through the month of November. There can be different ending times, depending on the amount of candy you have.

5 Tips to Host a Halloween Party on a Budget

Every year my husband and I host an adult Halloween party. It’s seriously a blast. However, it could get out of control budget wise if I’m not careful. I get sucked into Pinterest and hundreds of dollars later I’m wondering what happened! Here are 5 tips that I’ve learned over the years that have helped me stay on budget and also throw an amazing party.

  1. Invites.  If you haven’t used Evite before, then you totally should. It has free options to make a cute Halloween Party invite and then you can also add in sign ups too! This is much cheaper and quicker than printing out you own invites and passing them around. Embrace the digital age and send a free digital invite!
  2. Food. This can be the most expensive part of your party if you don’t plan right. If you have a large group coming, then your first goal will be to make a list of what you will be having. Then delegate! I noticed on Evite that you can make a sign up with all of the items you need. This is what I do and it’s super simple. This way you won’t be buying everything for the meal. Most of your guests will be happy to help!
  3. Dinnerware/Utensils. Depending on your theme, you can go as fancy or as simply as you want. Most years I do get out my nice dinner set and use that. Then I grab some paper plates from the dollar store for dessert. This is super cheap way to do it. You can use your utensils on hand too. That’s free! If you are worrying about the clean up, then do a game to get it done while the party is going on. We do this every Thanksgiving and it works wonders. We go around the room and one person is “it”. They pick a number 1-100. Then you go around the room and take turns guessing. The one that gets it starts washing the dishes. We actually start with someone and then add the next person so there are two people washing and drying at a time. Then the next person to guess the right number relives one of the dish washers. The kitchen gets clean and you have fun!
  4. Decorations. I’ll tell you, the best way to buy Halloween decor is AFTER Halloween. I’ve done this the past few years and have a nice collection now. If you need some before then check out the dollar store or your local Lowe’s for clearance items. You could also borrow items from neighbors and friends.
  5. Activities. I like to use what we have on hand for these games. We play a lot of games that just involve paper and pencils. I’m pretty sure you have them in your home, so that would be free. If you check Pinterest for game ideas, then be on the look out for the materials you need well in advance. Buying items the day of will most likely mean you’ll pay full price.

Halloween Classroom Party Ideas that are Easy & Fun

Halloween is just a few short weeks away. My kids are already counting down the days until their school Halloween party. If you are in charge, you may need some ideas to keep these kids entertained. I love a good Halloween game, but I don’t like spending a ton of money or time on every game/craft/treat.  I’ve found 5 fun and easy party games/treats that the kids are sure to enjoy, and you won’t be spending a ton of money either. I also love these ideas because they don’t require a ton of supplies or sugar!

  1. Halloween Bingo: This game is a classic, every kid will LOVE it! The best part? It’s super easy. Check out the free printable you can get here too.
  2. Easy String Cheese Ghosts: If you’re trying to find a good alternative to sugar and candy, what about having the kids draw and create their own ghosts? Then after they make a fun face, show them to their friends and then let them eat it!
  3. Candy Corn Toss. Who doesn’t love a little candy corn? This candy corn toss game is super easy and the kids all love to see how many they can get in the cups. You can let the kids eat them after they are finished too. Yum.
  4. Spider Races. Here is another super simple game that doesn’t take a lot of time to put together and one that the kids would love to do. See how far the kids can get their spiders and then let them keep their souvenirs.
  5. Eyeball Halloween Slime. This would definitely be a crowd pleaser. Let the kids help you make their own slime. Then they get to take it home too. You can find all the instructions here.

Tips to Help you Save the Most on Ski & Snowboard Equipment-Now is the Time to Buy!

If you love to ski and snowboard, then now is the time to grab those skis and snowboards at discounted prices. So how do you do that? To save the most money you’ll have to do a little research. Choose 3-4 locations that are close to you and have a good variety of ski equipment. You’ll want to ask each place the following questions:

  • What deals or early-bird promotions do you have going on right now? How long will that be going on? **I know some places do cheap tuning before November.
  • Do you have any used items for sale? What are the cost for each? **Some places sell used poles and helmets for only $5! If you are okay with used, then you will save a ton of money on everything you need.
  • What packages or bundles do you offer? **If you need skis, boots, helmet and poles, then getting a package will save you money in the long run.
  • What is your return policy? **My package came with a guarantee to return before Dec. 31st. That means I have a few months to test them out. If I don’t like them, I can return with a full refund. It’s good to know this just in case.

The way you can save the most money is to buy your equipment right now! For example, we just bought two ski packages for $99 each- that included skis and boots in each package. They were used, but still in good condition. Once they sell out of these packages then they are gone. So get out and grab those skis and snowboards and be ready for your winter adventures.

5 Things You Must Do in San Francisco (With Savings Tips Too!)

I recently returned from a fun adventure in San Francisco, California and I had to share my must-do list. This time I was NOT traveling with kids. However, most of these activities I would take make kids and do them the next time we are there. San Francisco has so much to offer and I loved every second I was there.

  1. Bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. This is a definite must and a highlight of our trip. First, we found an amazing place to rent our bikes. It’s called Basically Free Bike Rentals. Let me explain how it works- You grab your rental bike from the location near Fisherman’s Wharf. You will get the value of your rental for in store credit at Sports Basement, which is a sporting goods store, conveniently located on the bike trail to the bridge. So we got our bikes, paid about $35 for the day and then went to their sports store and bought $35 worth of items for FREE with our credit. Super cool and totally legit. The bike across the bridge is so fun. There are some beautiful views of the bridge on the trail from Fisherman’s Wharf. Take your time and enjoy the ride. On the way back, you can ride the ferry from Sausolito…which is my #2 favorite thing to do.
  2. Visit Sausolito and walk around the stores and ride the ferry back to the wharf. This is the best way to get back, unless you are ambitious and want to ride your bike back over the bridge. The town is charming. Be sure to stop at Venice Gourmet Delicatessen and get an Avocado Turkey Club sandwich. It’s simply amazing. The ferry ride back is super fun too. Go to the top and let the wind get in your face and enjoy the views from every angle.
  3. Ride a cable car. This totally lives up to the hype. You need to “hang out” as you are on the cable car. It’s terrifying, but totally worth it. We did it a few times. Be sure to get on the route that goes by Lombardi street. You can even hop off there and walk down the curvy street which is beautiful. A way to save on transportation in the city is to get the multi-day passes if you are there for awhile.  One Cable Car ride is $7, so it will add up. You can also walk the city pretty easily.
  4. Coit tower and the Greenwich stairs. This is a beautiful walk to the tower and then an even more beautiful walk down the stairs. I love good walks like this. You can pay to go to the top of the tower and see the views, or you can enjoy them from below.
  5. Ghirardelli Square is a must. Not only do they have amazing ice creams and sauces, the view from the square is breathtaking. Try to be there at night when the square is lit up with lights and the sun is setting on the bay. There are plenty of places to sit right there by the water and enjoy the view.

Broccoli Cheese Soup Recipe (Panera Bread Copycat)

When it’s cold outside all I want to do is eat soup! Seriously, I’m always looking for new soups to eat.  It’s always a fine line to find a soup that not only I love, but my husband and kids love as well. When I made this Panera Bread copycat of their Broccoli Cheese Soup, we all loved it! My kids didn’t even complain of the “green stuff!”  It’s definitely a keeper and one we will do over and over again during the winter months.

This recipe and picture comes from The Recipe Critic and I love it.  **Note- when I made this, it BARELY fed 5 of us- and 3 of those are small kids!  So I usually double the recipe now. **

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • ½ medium chopped onion
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 cups half-and-half cream
  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • ½ lb fresh broccoli (about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup carrot, julienned
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 8 ounces grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Saute the onion in 1 tablespoon melted butter and set aside. In a large pot whisk together the melted butter and flour over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Slowly whisk in the half and half and chicken stock. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes.
  3. Add the broccoli, carrots, and onions. Let them simmer on medium low for about 25 minutes until the broccoli and carrots are tender.
  4. Add nutmeg, salt and pepper and sharp cheddar cheese. Let the cheese melt and then serve. For a smoother soup puree it in a blender.

5 Tips to Give you a Little More Energy in Your Day

Who wants a little more energy in their day? I think we all are saying, Yes! I have 4 young kids and am truly exhausted every day. I know women that work full time and have teenage kids, or older women who are now retired that have that same low energy in common. It’s a tricky thing. I know there are some who may not agree with these tips, but in the past year, they have truly worked for me. Plus, they give added benefits! Check out these 5 tips that just may help you get t hat energy you are craving.

  1. Exercise in the morning. It’s super hard to get up in the morning, but it’s so worth it. I get up at 5:20 am and either go for a nice run or head to my local gym and attend a fitness class at 6am.  I’m home by 7:15 and ready to start my day. This exercise gives me the energy I need in the morning and makes me feel so good.
  2. Take a shower in the morning and get ready first thing. Even if you don’t exercise in the mornings, try and wake up and get right in the shower, do your hair and makeup, get dressed and be ready for the day. I can definitely tell a difference in my energy when I’m in my sweats all day compared to when I’m dressed and feel good about myself. Plus, then when the doorbell rings, you’re not running to your room to get ready, you’re already there!
  3. Eat a balanced diet. You’ve heard this time and time again. Guys, I SO agree with this. It doesn’t mean you can’t eat that yummy donut or reward yourself with some chocolate. You just need to balance it out with some healthy options too. Listen to your body. If you feel sluggish after eating a certain breakfast, then switch it up. I’m trying to go light on my carbs in the morning and it’s made such a big difference. Try eating some oatmeal or an egg and veggies. You CAN switch it up. I also try to eat some small snacks throughout the day to keep me happy and not hangry throughout the day. This gives me a little more energy when I need it. I love the yummy Babybel cheese and crackers, or hummus and veggies. Throughout the day be sure you’re drinking water. This will also help with your energy level.
  4. Take a power nap. Yep, you heard me right. You can totally take a nap and not feel guilty, especially if you’re waking up early to exercise. Even if you have young kids it is possible. Find a time when the kids are busy or out of the house and lay down and close your eyes. Don’t get on your phone! So many times I actually fall asleep and it feels so good. This nap gives me that extra energy I need for the after school chaos and nighttime sporting events and dinner. This nap is usually around 20-30 minutes for me. Anything more will give me that zombie/blah feeling. So set a timer and enjoy that 30 minutes of shut-eye.
  5. Have something to look forward to. If you have every day filled with laundry, dishes, appointments, work and kids. You may feel that weight on your shoulders. Lately I’ve tried to add in something that I can look forward to each day. It doesn’t need to be big. Some ideas could include: A lunch date with a friend, 30 minutes to read that new book you’ve been eyeing, chocolate ice cream you have hidden in your freezer, or even shopping at your favorite store. Think of something in the morning or plan a week at a time. This will help you get some added energy and bring a little more happiness into your day.

Easy Fresh Peach Pie

I must say, I love peaches, but I love them when they are freshly picked off the tree and still have that slight crunch. I’m not a slimy peach fan. This peach pie is one of my favorites to make this time of year with all of the fresh peaches ready for eating. If you have peach trees and are overloaded with peaches, be sure to check out this easy step by step guide to canning peaches. Then with all of your leftovers, make this yummy dessert. This easy peach pie recipe is a yearly tradition that our whole family loves.

Easy Fresh Peach Pie

6 Fun Things to Do This Labor Day Weekend

It’s Labor Day weekend which means the close of summer. Can you believe it? Where I live, this is when the local pools and splash pads close down for the winter. This weekend is the time to enjoy the sun and finish off those summer bucket-list ideas. If you need a few fun ideas for this weekend, check these out.

  1. Find a local festival. Do a little research in your area and there will definitely be a festival or celebration going on near you. Try a new one out!
  2. Explore a new lake nearby. If you have any toys like kayaks or small boats, bring those with you. My kids just love the big inflatables. Being outside on a lake is a great way to close out summer.
  3. Take the kids to your splash pad. Most of these will be closing after Monday, so get your fill this weekend.
  4. Host a BBQ with family and friends. This weekend you’ll find great deals on food at your local stores. This is a great weekend to get out on the grill.
  5. Movie in the backyard. We still have good weather this weekend. If you are the same, grab that projector and a white sheet. Turn on a favorite movie in the yard and invite some neighbors.
  6. Take a hike! The weather is nice and warm, it’s a great time to get in the mountains and hike around. I always feel so much better when I’m out and about.

6 Clever Ways to Explore a New City and Find Unique Things to Do

We love traveling to new destinations. This world is full of beauty and there is so much to discover. I’ve noticed that when we are in new locations there are a few things we have done that make these new destinations so fun. Check these 6 tips that will help the next time you find yourself in a new city or town.

  1. Find the tallest building or mountain in the city or town. Once you find that out, then figure out a way to get to the top! If it’s a super tall mountain, obviously that won’t work, but check into what is possible. That way you can see from the tallest vantage point and might find other places you want to visit just by looking down. For example, recently we visited Austin, Texas. The tallest point there is only a short hike up to Mr. Bunnell. Once we were there we saw a picture perfect view of the city as well as the surrounding areas. That vantage point is so fun.
  2. Research what that city or town is famous for. We recently went to Philipsburg, Montana and did you know they were famous for their Montana gems? I didn’t either, until I did a little research. We were able to go mine gems and our kids absolutely loved it. Take advantage of these unique attractions that can only be done at certain places.
  3. While you are visiting the city or town, check and see if they have any festivities or celebrations going on. There are so many random celebrations that you may not even know of. When we visited the very small town of Anaconda, Montana they were having their Smelderman’s days. I had no idea this was a thing until I heard about it from a local. This fun celebration provided a money drop, free candy, BBQ, and parade. Local festivities can be anything from boat races to farmers market. Exploring the city this way makes you feel like a local and will connect you to that location.
  4. Use yelp to find one of a kind food and be daring! When in a new place you have to try the food that is unique to that area. In New York, I’ve heard the food carts that are everywhere have the best Gyros. I totally didn’t think that would be the case, but I was up to try it out. The gyro was amazing! I was so glad we gave it a try. Also, be sure to ask locals where the best places to eat are. We do that every time we are in a new place. Locals know the secrets.
  5. Use all forms of transportation. Recently we returned from New York. We were able to explore the city by plane, subway, bus, water taxi, boat, train and of course by foot. It’s amazing how each form of transportation provides a different way to view the city. You could even grab a bike or scooter. See what is provided and try a few ways of getting around instead of just one.
  6. Reach out to friends, family and acquaintances that lives in your city or town you will be visiting. Tell them you will be visiting their city and ask for recommendations and if they are free to meet up. This is one of our favorite things to do. Even if we aren’t best friends, these locals love to explore the city with you and can give you some good inside info or be an expert travel guide. On occasions these friends or family might invite you to their own home. I love these unique experiences that really bring that local element into your visit. I remember being in Austria and being inside a family home and actually seeing how they live and cook. Those experiences are truly the best.

5 Tips for Last-Minute Back to School Shopping

If you haven’t started school yet, it’s just around the corner. You may have already purchased some of your supplies and clothing, but you can still grab the rest right now. There are some awesome deals going on now that we should all take advantage of. Check these 5 last minute back to school shopping tips!

  1. By now your school supply list should be available. Grab that list and get shopping. By using a list you won’t buy impulsively on items you don’t need or use.
  2. For clothes shopping, be sure to check the main site for stores you will be shopping. Most stores right now have some sort of coupon code or discount you can grab with your shopping. For example, Kohl’s has the $10 off $50 purchase and 20% off. Use those discounts for heavy savings.
  3. Stock up on items you use a lot around the house that you might not necessarily use for school, but are on sale. Some examples are Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, and all of the craft items like pens, pencils, colored pencils, markers and scissors. I love grabbing a few of these for stockings. I know, crazy, but they are super cheap!
  4. Check out Amazon for clothing and supplies. If you have a list, do a quick comparison with Amazon. I’ve been finding some awesome deals on Amazon and they can ship right to your door.
  5. Did you know there is a Back to School category in Freebies2deals? There is! Check it out here and see all of the deals that have been posted. Chances are, you missed a few. This is the super easy way to see what is available that might just get your shopping done!

How to Save the Most Money on Broadway Tickets in New York City

Heading to New York City? Then I’m sure you have a Broadway play on your list of things to do. However, they are pricey! We just returned from New York and found the BEST ways to save on Broadway tickets. Hopefully this will help you save some money as well as enjoy a fantastic show.

  1. TKTS Booths. You’ll want to first download their App. This will tell you which shows are available on which days. Once you know which shows you want, then head to their booths. There are 3 locations and most open at 10am- but check their site before you go. The benefits of buying from TKTS are the discounted tickets- most 50% off and the low fees which are generally around $6 per ticket, which is a lot lower than you would pay for online fees. I paid $25 per ticket just in fees online.
  2. Rush Tickets/ Same Day Tickets. To get day-of tickets, then head to the actual theater where your show is located. Check the time their ticket booth opens and be there a bit before to get in line. Generally you can get same day/rush tickets for $50 and under. Some popular shows like The Lion King don’t necessarily do “rush tickets”, but they do have $99 ticket deals for random 1 person seats or front row tickets. That’s a great way to get discount tickets as well. Again, the fees to get tickets in person are super low.
  3. Lottery tickets. You can sign up for the lottery for the show you want to see. Each show has a different way they run their lottery. So be sure to read their guidelines. The benefit of the lottery is super low tickets. Again, they may be in areas that are partial viewing or harder to see areas, but if you can get them for $10, then that’s totally worth the price.
  4. Standing Room. If you don’t mind standing during the performance, then be sure to check at the theater if there is standing room tickets available. This usually is available if a show is sold out and they have room for standing.

**When buying a ticket, be sure you buy from reputable sites and locations. There are a lot of fraudulent tickets floating around and they will not be accepted for your show. I like to stick with the Broadway.com, TKTS Booths, and the actual theater where the show is being performed.
