Tips on How to Save More Money this Black Friday

Have you noticed that Black Friday deals started right after Halloween? I sure did! They have been going on and off for quite some time. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the sales and buy on impulse, not realizing that you didn’t get the best deal. Check out these tips to help you save even more money this week as we come to Black Friday.

  1. Have a list of what you want to buy. If you don’t know what you want or need then you will be buying a lot of unnecessary items which can add up fast. Doing this alone will help you save more money this season. I write up a big list of everyone that I need to buy for and then add the items in for each person. This will give you a road map for your purchases.
  2. Know the deals for the store you are shopping. This may sound daunting, but it’s actually very doable. If you were going to shop at Kohl’s then check their front page and look at what coupon codes you can stack together as well as what amount you need to get to to score their Kohl’s cash. Or, if you are shopping Target, checkout their Target Circle coupons and make sure they are clipped for those items you are buying. Be sure to check the main page of the store you are shopping, grab those coupon codes and any other cash back, rebates or deals that are available. This will help you save even more money.
  3. Use the Holiday Match Price Guarantee. If the store that you shopped has a price match guarantee, then use it! I’ve called many times to Target’s customer service and had them adjust the price on an item I bought that was now on sale and at a lower price. It totally works! They give you that money back, easy peasy. So do a quick check this week to see if you can score some money back from items you’ve already bought AND keep a lookout for price drops until Christmas.
  4. Check out Freebies2deals often. You will see the HOT deals and items posted here throughout the day. I know there will be items posted that are on your list. So be ready!

Top 5 Family Friendly Places to Visit in San Francisco

I recently returned from a fun adventure in San Francisco, California and I had to share my must-do list. This time I was NOT traveling with kids. However, most of these activities I would take make kids and do them the next time we are there. San Francisco has so much to offer and I loved every second I was there.

  1. Bike across the San Francisco Bridge to Sausalito. Check with your hotels and see if they offer free bikes or discounts on your bike rental, most do. Biking from Fisherman’s Warf to the bridge is around 3 miles and then over the bridge to Sausalito is a bit more, but so worth it. Take your time and enjoy the ride. When you make it to Sausalito stroll through the small down and charming street. Eat a yummy lunch and sit by the water for a little break. Then the best thing to do is ride a ferry back to Fisherman’s Warf with your bike. That way you get to see the city by water. It’s beautiful.
  2. Ride a cable car. This totally lives up to the hype. You need to “hang out” as you are on the cable car. It’s terrifying, but totally worth it. We did it a few times. Be sure to get on the route that goes by Lombardi street. You can even hop off there and walk down the curvy street which is beautiful. A way to save on transportation in the city is to get the multi-day passes if you are there for awhile.  One Cable Car ride is $7, so it will add up. You can also walk the city pretty easily.
  3. Ghirardelli Square is a must. Not only do they have amazing ice creams and sauces, the view from the square is breathtaking. Try to be there at night when the square is lit up with lights and the sun is setting on the bay. There are plenty of places to sit right there by the water and enjoy the view.
  4. Painted Ladies. If you are a Full House fan then this is a fun place to be. I’m still so surprised at how many people love this show and want to see those houses. There is a green hill and park for the kids across from the houses. You could pack a lunch and enjoy being outside.
  5. Find yummy places to eat. You’ll notice when you go to San Francisco that the normal chain restaurants are not to be found. It’s kind of nice. It makes you get outside of your comfort zone and try something new. We went to a few new places and loved them! Try these out: Codmother’s Fish & Chips, Eight AM, El Rancho Grande, Crepe Cafe, and Ghirardelli.

Halloween Safety Tips for Today!

halloween-safety-tipsHalloween is today! Are you ready to go trick or treating? Halloween is such a fun holiday with costumes and candy. It’s one that my kids look forward to all year. I mean, getting a whole basket full of candy by just walking around the neighborhood? How can you not love that? However, Halloween can be one of those holidays that can be dangerous too. From food allergies to dark neighborhoods, you’ll want to keep your kids safe.  Here are a few tips to help you out.

Tip #1 Bring a Light: Traditionally Trick or Treating starts when it’s dark.  Plus, kids are in dark costumes making it hard to see them. Those alone are safety concerns with kids. To make it easier for the kids to be seen, be sure EACH child has a light with them or on them.  You can do this by buying Glow in the Dark items.  One great option are these super cute Glow in the Dark Bracelets from Target for great prices! You can choose FREE store pickup so you can have them in time.  Another great option are headlamps. Parents can wear these as well as kids.  Target has a great headlamps too that you can snag. So there are a few ways to keep the kids bright enough to be seen by people and cars.

Tip #2 Candy Check: Be sure to do a quick check for opened candy, hard candy for those little kids, and any food/candy that may look out of place. If your gut says something is wrong, throw it out.  I always let the kids eat a few pieces along the way, but stop at a street light or use your flashlight and check the candies that are chosen before they eat them. Then when they get home, do the candy check on all of the items. If your kids have allergies, this is especially important.

Tip #3 Face Paint Instead of Masks: Masks are super fun but they also block your sight, especially at night. This can be extremely dangerous when they are running across streets. Try using Non-Toxic face paint instead. This way you won’t be affecting their sight. If you do use face paint, be sure to always test small areas on your face before you cover it.  You want to make sure you aren’t allergic. Also, be sure to clean your face thoroughly before you go to bed.

Tip#4 Make a Well Known Route: Teach children where they can go for trick or treating. Create a route that goes along well lit sidewalks and to houses that they know. This is especially important if your older kids are going by themselves. They want to be in safe areas where they are familiar with.

Tip#5 Use LED Lights and Carving Knives: When creating your perfect Jack-O-Lantern, try using the cutting knives that come in in the pumpkin carving packages. These small knives are perfect and even younger kids can use them. Avoid using kitchen knives that may be dull. Using those could result injuries. Also, instead of using candles in your pumpkins, try using LED lights. You can grab these safe LED lights at Walmart for around $3.00 each.

Hopefully these tips will remind you of a few ideas to keep you and your kids safe. Have a fun and safe Halloween!

5 Family Friendly Places to Visit in Yellowstone National Park

We recently returned from Yellowstone National Park and it was so fun. It was my kids first time going which made it even more memorable. There are so many fun hikes, trails, sites to see in the park that are great for all ages. Here are 5 places we visited and loved.

  1. Midway Geyser Basin.  As we were driving up to the Midway Geyser turn off we saw all of the smoke coming off of the hot pots. It was a cold day so the smoke was thicker than usual. It made it look very magical. This walk around Midway Geyser Basin is short and sweet. It’s on a boardwalk so it’s accessible for strollers.
  2. Grand Prismatic Spring/ Fairy Falls. This stop is where you can walk up to see the Midway Geyser Basin from up high. It’s such a different view then when you walk around through it. The colors (pictured above) are amazing! You could also continue to Fairy Falls. This walk is a bit up hill and could be a little rocky. My 5 year old was able to do it with a little help.
  3. Old Faithful. This is a must do, just because of the name. Everyone knows Old Faithful, so you must go see it. The visitors center has a very good estimate of the time Old Faithful will go off. It’s around every 90 minutes. There is a great visitors center that has some fun information and a movie. So if you get there with plenty of time before or after the eruption, then take some time there.
  4. Yellowstone Lake. If you like to fish this is a great place to do it. If you don’t, you could still go to the lake and throw rocks and have a picnic. It’s beautiful scenery.
  5. Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. This is super cool. When we arrived, I didn’t know what it would be like. I was amazed at how big and deep the canyon was. You can go to both the lower falls and the upper falls. Both of these offer different views of the canyon and both are worth the time.

If you have time to stop in the town of West Yellowstone, shop the cute stores. Grab a souvenir and some ice cream. It’s a charming town.

5 Fun Adventures to do in Seattle, Washington

We just returned from a fun trip to Seattle, Washington and we absolutely loved it. I actually grew up going there once a year visiting family, so I know the area quite well. However, it’s been a few years since we have been, so it was time. This time around we went without our kiddos, so we were able to do some different adventures! Here are a 5 fun things to do in and around Seattle that we loved.

  1. Walk around and eat at Pikes Place. You may hear all of the time that Pikes Place is a fun place to shop, but did you know it’s a fun place to eat too? We were surprised as how many food places are there on the street and so yummy. My suggestion is to go hungry and try some of the fun, unique places that are there. A few of our favorites were Piroshky Piroshky- with fresh salmon biscuits and pastries, Beecher’s Handmade Cheese- try their Mac n Cheese, and Pikes Place Chowder. A little ways down by the pier is Ivar’s Fish and Chips. They are amazing too.
  2. Take a hike in the forest. The Seattle area has some of my favorite hiking trails. I love the tall pine trees and the smell of rain in the air. Our favorite hikes are Rattlesnake Ridge, Franklin Falls, Oxbow Trail Loop and Denny Creek Trail.
  3. Visit the Space Needle. This was the first time we actually went up the Space Needle and it was pretty incredible. This does cost a bit more money, but if you have the time and means, then it would be fun. The Space Needle has a glass floor and glass benches that are to take pictures on and test your courage! The views of Seattle and the Puget Sound are beautiful on the top.
  4. Take a Ferry. We love to ride a ferry to an island and walk around or ride bikes. You can take your car onto the Ferries and then explore the islands. Try taking a ferry to Bainbridge Island and exploring that area. This is an inexpensive way to travel around and be on a boat!
  5. Enjoy a Harbor or Locks Cruise. Have you heard of the Seattle Locks? They are seriously so cool. You can take a Locks Cruise where you actually go through the locks and see how the process works. Enjoy the cruise on the water from Seattle through the Puget Sound and around the islands or through the locks. It’s a beautiful way to see the area.

How to Save Money on Fall Yard Updates

I love my home, but somehow I’m always changing it around a bit. House updates are always fun but take time and planning. We are focusing on our outside landscape now that the weather is cooling off. We are making some changes which I’m super excited about. It doesn’t have to cost a ton of money to make a big difference in your yard. Here are a few tips that will help you save money and also help you enjoy being outdoors a little more.

  1. Make a plan. If you don’t have a visual plan on what you want your yard to look like then you will buy unnecessary items or have to redo things which will cost more money. Make a visual plan, write it down, talk to neighbors (step 2) and then get to work.
  2. Talk to people who have a beautiful yard. This is completely free and so easy to do. Talking to someone who has a yard that you would like to have is the way to get your plan going. Most people would be so happy to talk to you about their yard, they usually are super proud of it. You could ask where they got their plants/bushes, containers, pavers, mulch/bark and more.  If you want to hire out a landscaper, then check with your neighbors as well. Sometimes your friends or neighbors will know someone who is affordable and can help you out.
  3. Check your local landfill. Believe it or not, but your local landfill could sell mulch/compost/bark at a great price. We get ours from the landfill every time we need it and it’s super affordable and looks really great. Usually you can get a truck load which will go a long ways. You save a ton of money instead of going to a greenhouse and buying it by the bags.
  4. Buy during the sale season. Certain flowers and bushes are on sale at certain times of years. Be aware of when these times are and then  buy. One way to know is to sign up for emails from your local greenhouse or even
Home Depot. They will send emails with sale prices for items that in stock which will save you money.
  5. Check second hand stores for pots and vases. If you want pots around your yard then check your second hand stores, goodwill, or even Facebook Marketplace to see if there are any items you would want.

Tips on How to Save Money on Interior House Paint

Did you know that painting a room will instantly change the feel of the whole house? If you want a warmer or calmer feel, there are colors that can help do that. Do you want a more modern feel? Then there are colors that can do that too. Whatever you prefer, painting the interior of your home makes such a difference. We recently painted our main kitchen area to a fresh, brighter color. Before it was a darker brown, now we picked Greek Villa from Sherwin Williams. I absolutely love it. Painting is amazing and can brighten a room, but it can also be expensive. So, here are a few tips on how to save some money when you buy your interior house paint.

  1. Plan & calculate your project. Before you buy the paint then be sure to measure your area and calculate how much paint you will need for your project. This will help you so you don’t overbuy. Remember, when you tint your paint you cant return it.
  2. Shop the sales. If you have a brand that you love, then sign up for their email list. This is where you will find out when the sales are going on. They may even email you some coupons.  I love the Sherwin Williams paint, so I wait for their 40% off sales. This will save you a lot of money.
  3. Re-use your paint brushes and paint rollers. If you are painting over more than one day, don’t throw away your paint brushes and rollers. You can put them in a bag and tie the bag closed so that no air can get in. This way it will stay wet and ready to use the next day. This will save you so much money when you re-use these items.
  4. Buy paint with primer in it. If you’re painting a wall that is darker, then you’ll want to get primer. But if you can get a paint with a primer, then it can save money in the long run.
  5. Buy paint in bulk. If you have a few different places around the house to paint, then take advantage of the sale and stock up on the paint. This way you can also use the same brushes and rollers, plastic covers and other painting materials.

Fun Summer Games to Play with the Family

It’s summer time which means you will probably be getting together with family and friends. Why not have some fun games planned to make the time a little more enjoyable. Here are a few games that you could play with all ages, some even include water balloons!

Musical Chairs
Get back to the basics with musical chairs. You could make a fun playlist with some of your families favorite tunes. Grab some lawn chairs and get some energy out as well.

Obstacle Course
Make a homemade obstacle course around your yard. We love doing this! You can include your playset, cones, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, baseball bats and balls. Be creative and have the kids plan a fun one.

Water Balloon Piñata
Hang water filled balloons from a tree limb or other high, sturdy structure. We like to use regular balloons for this, since they don’t break as easily as regular water balloons. It just prolongs the fun a bit. Then, treat them just as you would a regular piñata. Give the kids a stick or broom handle and let them bash away at the balloons! Make sure only one child swings at the balloons at a time and all other people stand at a safe distant so they don’t get whacked!

Water Balloon Target
Combine two summer favorites for one of the simplest water balloon games there is water balloon target practice. For this game, you’ll need some sidewalk chalk and a large paved area. Draw a large target on the paved area, with each ring worth a different number of points, and have the kids take turns tossing the water balloons at the target. This is a great game for smaller kids, because it helps them work on hand eye coordination and math.

Capture the Flag
This is one of my favorites from when I was young! This is such a fun strategy game to play. After dividing into two teams, you each hide a flag on your side of the yard- it’s best if you have a big area to play in. Then one team tries to steal the other’s flag from their home base before returning back to theirs.

Festive Food Ideas for Your 4th of July Weekend

I love the 4th of July. I love the red, white and blue, and all of the festivities that come with it. You might get together with family or friends and enjoy a BBQ or a picnic, whatever you do, food is usually involved. This year I wanted to make something different, but yummy. I’ve come up with a few different options. Hopefully one will work for you!

Tips For Flying with Kids- Short & Long Flights

Are you a fan of flying? I’ll admit, it’s not my favorite thing to do. I tend to get antsy about an hour into the flight. However, it’s SO much faster to get to point B, so flying is inevitable most of the time. Flying with kiddos adds a whole new dimension of being prepared and enduring short and long flights. I’ve come up with a few tips that have made flying with kids so much easier.

  1. Prep the kids for a plane ride. Explain to the kids what is going on when they fly. You can explain how many stops you may have, if they will get a snack and drink, who they are sitting by and what an airplane ride feels like. I forgot to explain how an airplane works to our youngest, so when we got on the plane she started to FREAK out. I didn’t know why until she finally told me that she thought the plane would be going upside-down. Oops! I did not tell her that it’s not like an amusement ride airplane- no loops and twirling going on. Once she understood, she was so much happier!
  2. Each child has their own backpack. If you’re child is old enough to carry a backpack, then do it! It’s so nice to have them pack a few of their favorite things that will bring comfort on the plane ride and in the airports. You could have them pack a few toy cars, dolls, books, activity books (see #3), tablets with games, and anything else they would enjoy doing.
  3. Sticker Books & Activity Books. This is something I’ve recently started bringing and my kids LOVE them. I go on Amazon and grab a few new sticker books and activity books. I don’t show them until we are well on our flight and they need something to do. I pull these out and give one to each kid. This keeps them busy for awhile.
  4. Individual bag of snacks. Every flight I make a snack bag for each kid. Again, I don’t give it to them until we are well into our flight. I try and space it out. If we have a stop overs then I make a bag for EACH leg of our journey. It doesn’t need to be big or fancy, but the excitement of a treat/snack makes it so fun. Some examples of things I put in their bags are gummy candies, goldfish crackers, pretzels, suckers, fruit snacks, banana chips, dehydrated fruits, and cookie assortments like oreos. You can find most of those here.
  5. Bring headphones & blankets. It’s so nice to have individual headphones for movies that are on the TV in front of you. For kids, it’s even nicer to have headphones that fit and are comfy, consider grabbing some of these. It’s the worst to have earphones that don’t fit or keep falling out. You could also bring a favorite blanket or pillow to keep them comfortable.
  6. Know Your Flight Plan. If you have multiple stops, then be sure to check out the airport that you will be stopping in. If you have time to grab a meal, then do it. Give the kids time to stretch, use the bathroom, eat a good meal and get ready for the next stretch. If  you don’t have time to do all of those things and you have a fast connection, be sure you know where you’re going ahead of time. Consider grabbing food at your first stop that you could eat on your connecting flight. Being prepared ahead of time will make the flight so much better, especially with kids.
