9 out of 10 people love going to the movies or watching them at home. Okay, so we made those statistics up but we’re sure it isn’t far from the truth. Anyways, we thought it would be fun to give you aspiring filmmakers out there a list of movies that were made on a low budget that went on to become successful films. In other words, it is possible to make a movie on next to nothing and have it become the “next big thing.” So, if you’re ready to check out our list of movies made on a low budget, you can go ahead and scroll down now!
The Blair Witch Project
While no one can quite agree what the budget of this movie was, the most common figure that we’ve heard is around $60,000 which may sound like a lot of cash but in terms of movie money, it’s next to nothing. Either way, the movie went on to make millions and millions of dollars. To be exact, it made around 200 million dollars in theaters alone.
Star Wars
While Star Wars had a budget of over 10 million dollars (which was a lot of money back in the 1970s), it was hardly nothing for what the first film was able to do. Grossing close to 1 billion dollars, this film became its own brand and won the hearts of many. Over 30 years later, it still has a huge following and is on the “best movie of all time” lists of many folks.
Cabin Fever
While most people say that this film had a budget of over 1 million dollars, the actual film was made for much less than that. It later sold for millions of dollars at the Toronto film festival and went on to become the movie that made Eli Roth the director that he is to this very day. If you haven’t seen the film, it’s a really good horror flick that we loved.
Clerks
Clerks was a comedy film made in the early 90s by Kevin Smith who later went on to become somewhat of a pop culture icon. Made on a budget of around 28 grand, the movie went on to spawn a sequel and make over 3 million dollars in the box office. Aside from that, it more or less made the careers of many people including Jason “Jay” Mewes.
Hopefully you had fun checking this list. If you did, be sure to let us know and we may do more like it in the near future. Of course, there are tons of movies out there that were also made on low budgets but these are just the ones that came to mind. Now, what if you have never even heard of these movies? If that’s the case, we highly recommend checking them out and you can most likely find all of these for $10 or less each on DVD or Blu Ray.
If you’re anything like us, you absolutely love to read. There’s nothing like diving into a good book that is both well written and entertaining. It’s almost like an escape, right? Anyways, one thing that we don’t like about reading is the cost of books. They can be pretty dang expensive and if you’re an avid reader, those costs can add up fast. So, what can you do about it other than quit reading? We have an answer! Use the tips below to get your read on without spending a ton of money. Ready to get started? Good. Scroll down!
eBooks
eBooks are becoming an excitingly popular way to read books. You can read them on tablets, your computer, and on eReaders such as the B&N Nook. Regardless of how you read them, they are typically cheaper than buying the paperback or hard cover versions of your favorite books. In fact, a lot of online stores that specialize in selling eBooks have quite a few that are only 99 cents. On top of that, there are thousands of free eBooks out there.
Library
This may seem like a very old school method to a lot of you but we’re big fans of libraries. The books are free, the environment is soothing, and generally speaking, the staff is very helpful. You have to have a real love of books to work in a library so that’s why we will always recommend it as a good source of cheap reading. In fact, it’s free reading! That is, unless you lose a book in which case you’ll probably be charged a pretty penny for it.
Discover Local Writers
If you know of any local writers, approach them about their work. Chances are, they’d be more than willing to give you a free copy of their latest book in exchange for a little bit of feedback. Not only that but you will be supporting others in your area that have a passion for writing (much like you have a passion for reading). If you don’t know of any writers who are local to you, do a little bit of research and see what you can come up with. There are bound to be at least a few around you but you may just know about these writers yet.
And while these are just a few of the many cheap or free sources of books out there, we realize that there are many more. You have the option of going to used book stores, eBay, thrift stores, pawn shops, and anywhere else that may have books at great prices. Heck, you could even try looking around yard sales or just asking some of your reading buddies if you can borrow a book or two. Regardless of what you do, we genuinely hope that you save money and are still able to read as much as you’d like to. Now, let’s get to reading!
