Many of us have been in a position where we have taken a meal to a friend or someone else we know. Life circumstances like having a new baby, surgery, moving or lost of employment to those we care about can make us want to help them out a little. A good meal taken into someone can lift their spirits as well as keep the stress level for that day low…they don’t have to worry about fixing dinner that evening.

Here are a few tips if you are planning to take dinner into someone you care about.

1. Find out if there are any food allergies or strong dislikes. You don’t want to make something they cannot eat.


2. Make something that is family-friendly, especially if they have children. Foods that most everyone will like and appreciate. This is not the time to try out a new recipe! Make something that you know will turn out and that your family enjoys. Some of my favorite take-in meals are homemade lasagna, baked ziti, lemon chicken, sloppy joes, chicken noodle soup, taco soup, and spaghetti pie.


3. Take the food in containers that do not have to be returned. There is nothing worse that someone having extra dishes at home and trying to get them back to you. Invest a few small dollars in disposable pans that you can cook the food in and they can throw away when they are finished.


4. Take a balanced meal. I like to take in a salad or side dish with the main dish, then a simple dessert. We all need a little sweet at the end!


5. Depending on the situation, make enough for leftovers. Sometimes they might need leftovers the next day for lunch or dinner, or to freeze for next week. Gauge that by the individual situation.


6. Sometimes taking in a meal that is not cooked, but can be immediately frozen, is a good idea. Then they can make it when they need it most. Just make sure you send cooking directions with it.

If you are like me, you are tired of all the candy and junk that comes home on Valentines Day! It is just as bad as Halloween, I swear. Last year I decided to make my kids non-candy Valentines. I found these cute mazes on 90% clearance last year at Walmart. I was able to buy over 60 mazes for less than $2! Talk about penny pinching.

So I bought them last year planning ahead. Glad I did. I threw these together in a short amount of time. I made 48, for my 1st graders class and 3rd graders class. Gender neutral too. Love that. They just wrote the “to” and “from” on the back of the card.

i just measured how large I wanted the card size to be based on the size of the maze. Then I mass cut the cards. I put together the saying in Microsoft Word using some free fonts (Love Lettersand Cupid de Locke). It was easy and fun to put together, and my kids are happy with them!

I know there are many places online that show you how to make heart shaped crayons. I have been doing this with my kids since 2008. They love it and so I thought I would share with you in case someone hadn’t heard about it.

PLUS…this is the perfect way to use up all those broken crayons! Another way to use what you have.

Heat your oven to 250 degrees. You take old, broken crayons and put them in a mini tin, melt, and make crayons. I have a silicone heart one, which is perfect for Valentine’s Day. You could use a regular mini muffin tin too. Place a sheet pan under it to catch any drips (although I have never had any). Put in the oven until the crayons melt, about 10 minutes.

Once the crayons are cool, take out of the pan. Smooth rough edges by rubbing on a piece of paper.
