From now until Tuesday night, Smith’s is having a “double coupon” event – but the double coupon is almost a misnomer. In some ways it’s actually BETTER than double coupon, because any manufacturer’s coupon under $1 is credited as $1 – so for coupons under .50, it’s more than double (because a .25 coupon still gets credited as $1)!

Total: $31.81 + $5 in Catalina coupons good off next purchase

My receipt was seriously over 3 feet long, and it says I saved $89.28 – $52.35 of that was from the coupons and the coupon promo! I also ended up with 86 rewards points and 52 bonus points, for a total of 138. Had I really been with it, I would have used my double points coupon that came with my last rewards certificate, but I left it (and the $10 rewards certificate) at home – AGAIN…GRR! 😉

I was talking with a neighbor about duct tape. We were actually joking about how it can be used for pretty much anything. She told me the other item she can’t live without in her home is WD-40. I had no clue that it had so many uses.

So I decided to find out more about WD-40. Water Displacement #40. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a “water displacement” compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. I have always just thought it was for squeaky door hinges.

Here are some of the uses:

1. Protects silver from tarnishing.

2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.

3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.

4. Gives floors that ‘just-waxed’ sheen without making it slippery.

5. Keeps flies off cows…… that’s a funny one that I am not sure I personally will try

6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.

7. Removes lipstick stains.

8. Loosens stubborn zippers.

9. Untangles jewelry chains.

10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.

11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.

12. Keeps ceramic/terracotta garden pots from oxidizing.

13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.

14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots. I have even been using it on my windshield.

15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.

16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.

17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes – of course that’s the one I knew before!

18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor!

19. Removes dead bugs from your car.

20. Gives a the swing set slide a shine for a super fast slide.

21. Removes gum from carpet, hair, or dog fur (yes I have tried that)

22. Removes crayon from carpet (be sure to test WD-40 on low visibility area of carpet before using)

The claim is that there is nothing in WD-40 that will harm a person, but I just want to say if you are using inside your home — open a window because it certainly doesn’t smell great.

Hello again from Shelf Reliance! This week, we’ll be addressing identity protection and item documentation. For folks who take their credit seriously, few things could be worse than learning that your financial identity has been compromised. Emergency situations, when people are frantic, stressed, and focused on other things, present a perfect opportunity for burglars and identity thieves to strike while everyone’s looking the other way. And not all of them will be as obvious as this guy:

1. Schedule a yard sale on Saturday, Friday, second best day or Sunday (if acceptable in your area), avoid holiday weekends if possible. I have seen a few “Commuter Sales” that take place on a busy street on a weeknight.

2. Go through the house and decide what goes. A good rule of thumb: If you haven’t used it in a year, you can live without it.

3. Treat the sale like a business. Organize the merchandise by putting like items together so people can find what they’re looking for. Put clothing on a rack or string a clothesline to hang it on.

4. Run ads in local papers, on the Internet and put up fliers (you may need to check with your city to see what is allowed). Be specific about what type of merchandise you have. Make sure you list you big or hot ticket items. You’ll get the people who really want the stuff.

5. Spend time on your signs. Much garage sale traffic just follows signs, so make sure you write in large, legible block print on large, Place on busy corners near your home if sign codes allow. Make sure your directions simple yet specific

6. Consider having a joint sale with your friends or neighbors if you don’t think you have enough to fill a yard. More is better. Keep track of what belongs to who by using different colored price tags on each family’s items. We have found that having some brightly colored items seems to draw people in. Go grab a couple of helium balloons, they add color and can be used to draw people in.

7. Be prepared to haggle. If you’re firm on a particular item, put that on the tag. But remember, people that shop yard sales are looking for bargains. What you may think something is worth, may not be the same as what the shoppers feel it is worth. If stuff isn’t moving, start dropping prices during the day.

8. Don’t take checks.

9. Post a sign near the cash box that says “All Sales Final.”

10.On a hot day, sell cold drinks for $1 a can which will boost your take. A our family’s recent yard sale the kids sold lemonade and made quite a bit of money. If kids are helping make sure you keep an eye on them so people don’t take advantage of their generosity.

11. Donate anything that’s left. Don’t bring it back into the house. Take a tax deduction for the fair market value of each item.

We’ve been frightened by everyone around us into thinking we must save thousands of dollars immediately. For most this is a possibility. The media does us no favors when it makes the situation sound so hopeless that we might as well give up.

For me some financial planning options seem that they are more focused on the wealthy and not the real people. The real people are the people that really need the help.

After hearing about the gloom and doom, many of us think that if we can only save, say, $10 a month, then it isn’t worth it. Not true! Once you sock away that $10 and realize that you’re still okay, you’ll realize you can maybe put away a little more.

Maybe you increase it to only $20 a month, but that is $240 a year, plus the interest you’ll receive (it may not be a lot but it all adds up).

Even if you stick with $10 a month, that’s $120 a year, and if you think that isn’t much money, you can probably afford to put away more.

The best part of this technique is that you get into the habit of saving. Once you do that, savings can grow and grow as your income increases, your expenditures decrease.

Here are a few tips for saving more by starting small:

Pay yourself first. You’ve heard it before, but that’s because it works. When you pay your bills, write yourself a check. Depositing as little as $5 from each paycheck into a savings or money market account should get you to that initial goal of $10 a month. If that doesn’t hurt, increase it to $10 per paycheck. If, after a couple of months, you find $10 is painless, increase it a little more. Keep doing this and you might be surprised at how much you can afford to sock away!

If your employer offers direct deposit, even better. Open a savings, CD or money market account and have at least $5 per paycheck deposited into that account. Again, keep increasing this as you get comfortable with saving the money. Our credit union offers a plan where they automatically take a set amount out of our checking account each more and put it into a separate account earning CD rate interest.

Do you spend $2 a day on coffee, soda, a bagel, or some other inexpensive treat? Do that five days a week for 50 weeks, and you’ve spent $500! That is your latte factor.

When you save money with good deals or coupons (like we all do with the help of Pinching Your Pennies, consider putting the difference into your savings account.

Most importantly, get yourself into the habit of saving, and don’t underestimate the effect of saving just a little. All you need to do to begin is to just take that first, single step.
