New Weekly Feature from Shelf Reliance
The idea behind our weekly post is to provide tips and tricks that will help you to prepare your family for hard times, especially when it comes to food storage and emergency supplies. And since we all know the value of a good deal, you can also plan on hearing about upcoming sales and special promotions!
Since this is our first Shelf Reliance post, I’d like to ease into things gradually and just encourage you to start thinking about emergency preparedness as an essential part of your regular shopping trips. The shopping lists that are provided by Pinching Your Pennies always include great deals on items that can be stored or added to an emergency kit. Here are some ideas of common items you can stock up on for a rainy day:
- foods that are ready to eat (such as granola bars, fruit snacks, jerky, hard candy, etc.) – these foods may not taste as great after their expiration dates, but the calorie content will remain pretty much the same, and calories are the most important factor in an emergency situation
- bottled water
- fleece blankets
- waterproof matches
- batteries
- travel-size toothpaste and toothbrushes
- paper and pens/pencils
- pain relievers and other over-the-counter medications that your family tends to need
- sunscreen and insect repellent
- plastic bags (such as Ziploc or similar brands) – these are great for protecting important items from moisture, such as legal documents, medicine, matches, batteries, etc.
- toilet paper, as well as tampons, pads, and hand sanitizer
Take a look at the shopping list(s) you’ll use in the coming weeks. Are there items you passed over, thinking you didn’t need them? Consider for a moment if these deals could help your family be more comfortable or well-prepared in an emergency. Purchasing just an item or two each week will get you well on your way.

OK, So what about pork?
This is a follow to my earlier post about buying/cooking beef.
Again I want to thank Jeff from the Layton, Reams for providing me with great information.
Here are some tips on what to except when you buy pork:
Boneless pork loin chops, pork rib chops, center cut loin chops, sirloin end chops and boneless sirloin chops will all be nice and tender.
Boneless ribs, country style ribs and Slab ribs are overlooked for great meals. All work well in a crock pot, slab ribs on the grill will be very tender and have a wonderful flavor, just remember to cook low and slow.
Pork roasts;
Boston butt roast is a fatty roast works well in the oven, crock pot or a smoker. Boneless loin and crown rib roast are all ways a great meal, cook in the oven at a lower temp for best results. Bone in and boneless sirloin roast are very good oven roast.
Ground pork is all ways a great item to use in place of ground beef. Another one to use is ground Chicken this has a nice buttery flavor and makes wonderful tacos.
