How to Write a Good Review

Writing a good review can prove to be quite a challenging task. It’s hard to think of a good start and to plan in advance the points that you’ll make in your review. There are many types of reviews and they follow different rules.

You have to follow your intuition, too. Keep a personalized tone to make the review seem more genuine, because readers love reading objective reviews that are based on logical arguments and personal comments.

The Literary Reviews

The literary reviews fall into two different categories. You have informal literary reviews that appear in blogs, webzines, etc. Here you can quote your favorite lines or paragraphs and offer your personal opinion on a certain book. There is also the academic literary review where a more formal language is required. The arguments should be objective, literary critics should be quoted, too and you should contrast opinions and use arguments to sustain your ideas. You can also quote a few lines from the book, too.

The Musical Reviews

If you’re a music fan and love to write about music, chances are that you want to write a musical review, too. Even if you are a big fan of a certain band or music genre, you have to be objective. Mention both the good and the bad parts of a concert performance, of an album review or a song review. Offer details about the particular music genre that you talk about and about upcoming concerts or what album deserves to be bought. Focus on the band, too. Know and mention the names of every band member and write a little something about every one of them.

The Product Review

Probably one of the most popular reviews out there, the product review is something we all want to know and read more about. Before buying a new product, we often search the internet for more opinions regarding that particular product. We don’t like to waste money, so we look for objective, thorough reviews. So mention both the pros and cons of a particular review. Think of the things you’d like to know about a certain product, then insert this type of information in your review. Don’t make the review too long, though. Not many people have the time to read a short story online.

Keep It Simple and Short

A review isn’t supposed to be too long. Keep it simple and short. You need to keep the reader engaged and make him want to try out a certain product, listen to a certain album or read a particular book. Don’t mention everything; mention enough things to spark someone’s interest in a certain product.

Be Respectful

Even if the review is objective and you want to let other possible buyers know that a certain product is definitely bad, be respectful. Use a polite tone and try not to let your emotions rule you. Mention the reasons why a certain product isn’t worth the money and offer arguments to sustain your idea.
