The Pros and Cons of Being a Polyamorous Person

It’s hard to define polyamory, but it basically describes a person that loves more than one person at the same time. Although to some people this may be an unacceptable, impossible concept to convey, most people nowadays proudly declare that they are polyamorous.

Society is perpetually changing and so do our preferences. We evolve along with inventions, discoveries, political, cultural and geographical changes etc. A lot of psychologists believe that monogamy will become obsolete in time. We don’t know exactly what the future holds in stock for us, but we can think of some advantages and disadvantages of being a polyamorous person.

Pros: Honesty

Everybody appreciates honesty. If you are open about your relationship goals from the start nobody gets his or her feelings hurt. Not many people find out who they are and what they like so easily so if you know exactly what makes you happy, go for it. People will judge you either way, but it’s your life, your rules.

Pros: No Jealousy

Being polyamorous doesn’t necessarily mean having tons of lovers. You can only flirt, have a good time with other people while staying loyal to only one person. Because different people and personalities offer you many different things that maybe one partner can’t so polyamorous persons will never make their partner jealous because everything is transparent and you can set some ground rules so that everybody’s happy.

Pros: Love Is Complex

Polyamory shows how love can be so complex, yet feel so great. Experiencing love’s many sides will make you a more empathic, caring individual and you can make a difference in many people’s lives by loving them in different ways.

Cons: It Gets Tiresome

Sometimes, meeting up and spending time with different persons can be tiresome, exhausting. You listen to their stories, you spend time with them and you end up having little to no time for yourself and your own thoughts. You can be drained of energy so easily.

Cons: The More They See You

While you were honest from the start with all the persons involved in this polyamorous relationship, some people will develop feelings for you. Or you may develop feelings for someone in particular and this is when things get complicated. We are only human after all and we can get attached by others easily. When feelings are involved, the rules of the game and the expectancies change. Get ready to face some compromises and complications.

Cons: Others Won’t Get It

It will be hard to keep your lifestyle and your choices a secret. Even if you explain that you aren’t a cheater, people will judge you and they won’t get it even if you explain things to them. Because society and its standards aren’t ready yet to understand and accept the concept behind being a polyamorous person.

Cons: Sacrificing the Happily Ever After Feeling

Being polyamorous will prevent you from having that happily ever after feeling. Some people want a committed relationship where only two people are involved. You will want this feeling in the end and it will be hard to choose between being polyamorous and sticking with one person only. But in time we all change our needs, desires, dreams. You will know when the time comes for a change.
