Winter Camping Tips

Have you ever gone camping in the wintertime? For years, my husband kept asking me to go camping with him in the winter time. I always looked at him like he was absolutely crazy because that just seemed awful to me. I do love a good adventure though, so I eventually gave in. I’m glad I did!

Before I took that jump to be a winter camper, I definitely did some serious research (you know, to make sure that I wouldn’t die). If you are interested in hearing some winter camping tips to make sure you have a successful trip, check them out below.

Winter Camping Tips

Check out these tips here, and if you have any to add to the mix, comment below!

Pack Layers for Clothing

To stay warm in the outdoors, you have got to layer your clothes. Lots of socks, hats, and even gloves. Layer your tops too. I even wear leggings under my pants during these camping trips. Bringing warm clothing can make or break your camping trip.

Invest in a Winter Worthy Tent

Your typical tent just isn’t going to cut it when you are camping in the wintertime. You need a tent that is created to withstand cold temperatures and storm situations. These are often more expensive than a typical tent, but it will make all the difference in your experience.

Bring Hand Warmers

Have you ever used hand warmers? These are awesome for camping for several reasons. They are great for keeping in your pockets throughout the day to keep your hands warm, but they are really great for tossing in your sleeping bag to keep you warm while you sleep.

Grab a Propane Heater

A good propane heater is a great way to keep yourself warm while at your camp during the day. These are not for inside your tent (seriously…that’s dangerous for multiple reasons), but they can make your daytimes much better.

Add Blankets to Your Sleeping Bag.

Grab a sleeping bag liner or even bring extra blankets to put inside of your sleeping bag. It makes a world of difference in how warm you will be.

Camping 101: Non Food Items to Bring

I just got back from a 4 day camping trip and oh my goodness, did we have fun! I have camped all my life although we have not done it as often as I would have liked for the last couple of years. As it turns out, it’s easy to forget what you are doing when you take a break from it! I discovered that while I thought I was thoroughly prepared, I was not. I forgot some items that made it difficult to camp with ease.

I guess I should first acknowledge that while I do love to camp, I also like to have some amenities and things to make outdoor life a little bit easier. For example, I like to have a camp stove because cooking over a campfire is sometimes a pain, plus, I was camping in Oregon which means that many places have campfire bans right now anyway. So, back to the lesson at hand, here are the no food items to bring camping that will make your camping trip easier!

Camping 101: Non Food Items to Bring

Paper Towels / Washcloths, etc

I brought nice, fluffy towels for each member of our family. I did not, however, bring paper towels or washcloths of any kind to wash dishes or dry hands. Yeah, that was a real pain for me.

Pots / Pans / Cooking Utensils / Knives

This was actually our second camping trip of the season. Our first one was an absolute disaster and I forgot everything. Yes, this included the pots and pans for cooking with. I didn’t even bring a knife to cut the potatoes and veggies with. Yeah, we ran into town and bought food a lot that trip. It was ridiculous. (I was only about 2 weeks out of surgery though, so I’m blaming that).

Trash Bags / Plastic Storage Bags

Things are going to get dirty or wet or both and you don’t want to just toss them in your duffel bag or in your car, right? Make sure to bring along plastic trash bags as well as smaller plastic bags to store these things in until you get home.

Soap

For the love of all things, don’t forget to bring soap. While I did remember hand soap and body soap. I totally forgot to bring dish soap or laundry soap. Why laundry soap, you ask? Well, I have a toddler that wet the bed while we were camping and that sleeping bag simply needed to be washed. We couldn’t wait 3 more days. Luckily the campground we stayed in had a laundromat, but I had to scrounge around my car until I found enough quarters to pay for the soap in the dispenser.

Camping 101: How to Stay Safe in Nature

Are you heading out camping soon? Will this be your first camping trip? Are you a little concerned about staying safe while out in nature? Camping is a ton of fun and you can have an amazing time out there, you do need to prepare yourself to stay safe too though, because yes, things can happen and you need to be prepared for that.

These tips will help you to learn how to stay safe in nature. Have fun, my friends! I hope this camping trip is the best one ever!

Camping 101: How to Stay Safe in Nature

Bring a First Aid Kit

We all know how important first aid kits are, right? This is especially true when out in nature without a medicine cabinet or store nearby. Make sure you have a full first aid kit than can help with any ouchies that happen while out in nature. This should include bandages, alcohol wipes, allergy medicine, pain relief, etc.

Bring Bear Spray

If you are really out there camping in nature, a can of bear spray can go a long way toward making you feel safer out there. It seems like I am reading more and more about bear attacks or close encounters these days, so I’m always prepared with spray, even if I think my camping destination is not at risk of a bear sighting.

Sunscreen

I have gotten the worst sunburns of my life while camping. Even if you have lots of trees around you, you will be in the sun more than normal. You don’t want to come home in pain and burnt to a crisp, do you? BRING THE SUNSCREEN.

Watch the Weather Reports

You don’t want to get caught up in a storm that could hurt you or leave you stranded. Pay very close attention to the weather as it leads up to your trip. If the weather is going to be bad, consider cancelling. I know it’s a bummer to cancel vacations, but it’s a bigger bummer to be injured on vacation.

9 Camping Must-Haves for Your Trip

< !DOCTYPE html>

Okay, so yesterday we talked a little bit about the best tips on making a camping trip fun, but we haven’t yet talked about what you should take with you on this epic camping trip.  Honestly, most of us aren’t hard core survivalists or even kick-butt boy scouts which means that most of us could use a good reminder of what we should have with us when we head into the wilderness or to that awesome modern campground we just reserved (no judgement here, I do both kinds of camping).

So, here they are my friends, 9 camping must-haves for your trip:

  1. Matches or a lighter.  C’mon, I know you aren’t about to start a fire with the rock and stick method.  Grab yourself some matches or a lighter and make it easy on yourself.
  2. First aid kit.  You should always have a first aid kit in your car anyway, but be sure you have one when camping.
  3. Tarp.  In addition to your tent, a tarp is great for keeping the rain away.
  4. Sleeping bags.  No one wants to sleep on the cold hard ground.  Be sure that you have a good sleeping bag for nighttime.
  5. Flashlights.  It’s going to get dark at some point.  Make sure you can see!
  6. Pocketknife or multitool.  You never know when you are going to need to cut rope, or open a can.  Plus, side a multi-tool such a Swiss Army Knife have corkscrews, you can drink your wine while camping!
  7. Cooler.  You need to keep all of that yummy camping food nice and cold.
  8. Ice.  Again, even in the cooler, your food and drinks are not going to be so good without ice.
  9. Toilet paper.  This is especially true if you are out in the wilderness (campgrounds often keep such necessities in stock).  You don’t want to have to use leaves, do you?

What is the must-have item that you always make sure to take camping with you?

8 Tips for a Fun Camping Trip

< !DOCTYPE html>

Are you planning to take your family on an epic camping trip this summer?  I am literally packing for the first camping trip of the season as we speak!  Spending my morning packing though, has me thinking about all of the ways that we make sure our camping trips are successful and not to brag, but we haven’t had a bad camping trip yet!  That said, we are outdoorsy type people and I know that not everyone loves to be outdoors, so these may not work for everyone, but they have always worked for us!

Here are my 8 tips for a fun camping trip:

  1. Reserve your spot early. This is especially true if you are going camping at a popular location.  It sucks to show up ready to make camp only to find no spots open.
  2. Leave early.  Setting up camp in the dark isn’t always super easy.  With this in mind try to leave as early as possible so you make it to your destination before darkness falls.
  3. Make a list.  A couple of days before your camping trip make a list of things that you need to pack and a shopping list for camping gear that you may need.
  4. Shop before you go.  Take your list and head to store to stock up on food and gear well in advance of your trip.  You don’t want to be rushing to get supplies on the day you are suppose to be on your way. You also don’t want to have to buy it all once you get to your location (it’s going to be more expensive).
  5. Don’t forget chairs.  Okay, this is a camping foul that I have done.  I know it should be on the list, but we once forgot our chairs and while we still had a blast that trip, having chairs would have been a nice touch.
  6. Pack extra clothes.  You never know when the weather will turn or maybe you will slip and fall in the water.  It helps to have extra clothes packed with you.
  7. Bring something for the kids to do.  Yes, it is nice to enjoy the outdoors and the nature all around you, but sometimes it helps to have a little added something for the kids to do.  For our big kids we bring cards and dice for game playing and the toddler always has toys with him to play with.
  8. Unplug.  Even if the campground that you are staying in has wifi, make a point to unplug from electronics for your trip.  It’s nice to really get away sometimes.
