Today’s Argument: Shopping takes longer [if you coupon].

My Opinion: For a final argument this one is possibly the weakest.

This one is simply not true – at least not for me. I usually go coupon shopping one day a week and “other” shopping (when I purchase my produce, etc.) on different day. With my list and coupons in hand (and organized before I get into the store), my coupon shopping trips are the quickest. It wasn’t that way in the beginning, but now that I am a “pro” I am pretty speedy!

The author says that spending more time in the store could lead to more impulse shopping, “thus negating the savings.” Even if my coupon shopping trip did take longer, I would not impulse shop. Thanks to Pinching Your Pennies, couponing and self control, I am no longer an impulse shopper.

I haven’t found a reason against couponing that has changed my mind, but if you think you have one – please leave it in the comments.

Today’s Argument: The same coupons tend to be offered over and over again.

My Opinion: I am not really sure why this is an argument against couponing. Most of us typically purchase the same items (you know, the ones we love!) over and over.

She does mention that this is a problem if you like variety and experimentation. I do like some variety and experimentation but I find that there are always “new” coupons. This is especially true of new products. Companies almost always have a coupon somewhere so you can try their new product. If there is a product you want to try, check PYP’s current list of coupons to see if that product is on there. If not, try going to the product web page. That is a great place to find coupons!

I am thrilled that most coupons repeat, because I would be really sad if my favorite shampoo or laundry detergent suddenly stopped having available coupons. Plus, I like to stock up when there’s a sale.

Today’s Argument: Coupons can tempt you to spend your grocery dollars on things you shouldn’t.

My Opinion: Throughout the author’s arguments against couponing she has an underlying theme of lack of self-control on the part of the shopper. It’s as if she believes that women who coupon have no decision making skills. I find it insulting.

I believe her real argument here is that she thinks if you coupon you are more likely to purchase unhealthy foods because processed and unhealthy foods have coupons. That is true. There ARE a lot of coupons out there for unhealthy foods, but there are also a lot of coupons out there for healthy foods and non-food items. And, if I am going to purchase an unhealthy foods anyway (brownie mixes or Dove chocolates for example), I may as well get them cheap!

There are many non food items like shampoo, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, medications, etc. that I would never purchase without coupons. I save a lot of money on these items.

And, there are many healthy foods that can be purchased with coupons. Healthy cereals, whole grain pastas, sugarless pasta sauce, healthy mixes (like Bisquick Heart Smart), nuts, soy and almond milks, extra virgin olive oil, non-stick cooking spray, and many other products that fit well within the bounds of a healthy diet have coupons available. Plus, there are often printable coupons available for produce, eggs, milk, cheese, meat, etc. See your local listings on Pinching Your Pennies website with further information on current grocery deals and printable coupons.

Also, be sure to check out the current coupon list for your state at Pinching Your Pennies to see how many healthy foods and non-foods can be purchased using coupons. You might be surprised!

Today’s Argument: Clipping Coupons Takes Time.

My Opinion: Wow. This one actually seems a little absurd to me. Of course it takes time. Duh. I think the real argument the author is trying to make here is that the time it takes to clip coupons is not worth it. So I will restate her argument as: Clipping Coupons Takes More Time Than It’s Worth. She does actually say that your time might be better used “let[ting] yourself relax and not do[ing] anything for once.”

The amount of time a person spends couponing definitely varies. All I know is that I, personally, spend less than an hour a week and I save on average $100-$200/week. So for me it’s a no brainer.

I suppose you do have to weigh the amount of time and the amount you save I know the weeks I spend more time I save more money. I would guess that $150/hour is about what I “make” couponing. As much as I love relaxing and not doing anything – giving up an hour of that to make $150 seems worth it to me.

Is Couponing Worth It?

Several months ago I read an article that really bugged me. In the article, the author discussed 8 reasons why you should NOT coupon.

I began couponing a few years ago, thanks to Pinching Your Pennies and I haven’t looked back. I simply cannot believe how much money I save and how in control I feel. So, I have decided to go through the author’s arguments and share my own opinions on the subject.

Today’s argument: You have to buy a newspaper.

My opinion: Well, most people who coupon do buy newspapers. On average those who purchase newspapers spend about $5/week and save about $150-$200 week. I’m not great at math, but even I can see that the savings outweigh the investment on that one!

Pinching Your Pennies has a great resource that I use to make my weekly shopping list and to determine which coupons I need to have handy at the checkout stand. I use this every week and my savings always far outweigh any costs incurred in the couponing process!
