Tips To Entertain The Kids At The Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love the traditions that come with this annual feast, they warm my heart and their memories last throughout the year. I always enjoy Thanksgiving because it brings together two of my very favorite things, food and family. I am a self proclaimed “foodie.” I love being in the kitchen with my mother and sisters preparing the traditional meal along with a few family favorites and then enjoying it around the table with everyone we love.

This year as our company gathers together around the dinner table we will have just about as many kids as adults to seat. There really aren’t enough of us to break into an adult table and a kids table so I have decided that we will all sit around the same table this year. I know this decision may cause me a little more work as a mother but I am excited to give it a try.

While trying to decide how best to keep the kids engaged and pleasant during the meal I found some great tips online. I have also brainstormed a few of my own. The Family Fun website is also a great resource for family and holiday entertainment. Here are a few ideas you might try.

Printable Thanksgiving Activity Placemat
If your kids enjoy coloring, mazes and spot the difference activities, this might be a great option. Print the activity sheet and place it at each child’s seat with some crayons. It might buy a few minutes of quiet time.

Bag of Fun
Try keeping a bag of fun under a small child’s seat with quiet activities. Things like
stickers, crayons, small notebooks or a quiet book may be helpful to keep children under the age of 5 in their seats a little longer.

Get the Kids Involved
My children love to be included in anything that seems grown up. So I plan on having them help with the preparations for the day. This way they will take pride in the meal and sharing it with others. I have also planned some dinner table conversation topics that the kids will be able to join in on.

Entertainment
Have the children put on a show. The options for this are endless, maybe a skit or puppet show with a thanksgiving theme would be appropriate. Have them sing a song they know for your company. My children will be playing their upcoming piano recital pieces for our company. This way they are getting a little extra practice playing in front of others and have something to look forward to.

These are just a few ideas to help entertain and include your children during the Thanksgiving celebration. If any of you have ideas that work well at your table please share them in the comment section. Happy Thanksgiving!

New Twist On Traditional Thanksgiving Flavors – Recipe: Pumpkin Pecan Crunch

If your celebrating Thanksgiving this year, you have probably started to plan your menu. Or maybe you’ve just thought about all the favorite traditional foods that will garnish your table. Planning and preparing everyones favorite Thanksgiving foods is all part of the holiday tradition and what makes it so special.

Every year we make quite a few pumpkin pies along with some of our other favorites. Most everyone that will sit at our dinner table loves the traditional pumpkin pie but there are a few who could do without it. So I was thinking why not change it up a little. It is possible to enjoy the same flavors of the holiday while using a totally new recipe. I love looking for recipes online and many creative cooks have come up with interesting twist on the traditional favorites of the season. Here is one I found on www.mccormick.com that I though I might give a try.

Pumpkin Pecan Crunch

1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin
1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
6 teaspoons Pumpkin Pie Spice, divided
1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 package (18 1/4 ounces) yellow cake mix
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
Whipped cream (optional)
Spiced Pecans, recipe link below (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugars, 5 teaspoons of the pumpkin pie spice, vanilla and salt in large bowl until well blended. Pour into 13×9-inch baking pan which has been sprayed with no stick cooking spray.

2. Mix cake mix and remaining 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice in medium bowl with wire whisk. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over pumpkin mixture. Sprinkle with pecans. Drizzle evenly with melted butter.

3. Bake 50 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature. Serve with whipped cream and spiced pecans, if desired. Store leftover dessert in refrigerator.

Make Ahead: Prepare as directed. Cool completely; cover. Refrigerate overnight. Let stand 30 minutes before serving. To serve, cut into squares with sharp knife.

Place Cards – Save Some Confusion & Add A Special Touch to Your Thanksgiving Dinner Table

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. As daily we creep closer to the holiday my mind has started to churn with ideas for our annual family feast. Which foods to serve, how to decorate and who will be on the guest list are just a few of the things that have been running through my head. Each year it seems that we add someone new to the table. No longer does our guest list only include family. It has now grown to include dear friends and neighbors.

With the days leading up to the big day we will spend time making important decisions in order to fit everyone in the house. Time will be spent deciding where to set up tables, how many chairs we can fit around them, and where to place the kids. This alone has become almost as detailed as a battle strategy with our ever growing list of loved ones that will crowd into the house in order to share this day.

One thing I never want is for our guest to feel uncomfortable. Every year it seems someone does not feel comfortable enough to sit down at the table with out asking, “Where do you want me to sit?” With such a large party we usually serve our food buffet style. Everyone seems to go through the line filling their plates with the traditional favorite foods and then comes the awkward scenario of our guest standing with plate in hand not sure where to sit. Maybe I’m a bit to casual because my first thought is for everyone to just grab a seat and we usually end up facilitating seating as everyone comes off the line. This year I am determined it will be different. We are going to use place cards.

Using place cards can be a great way to make sure that everyone has a seat and this way your guest know where they can sit and feel comfortable doing so. This eliminates the uncomfortable plate in hand scenario and gives direction to your guest.

There are not may guidelines for using place cards but there are a couple. It is appropriate to use place cards when there are more than 4 guest at a dinner party. Place cards lend to a more formal setting, which I think could qualify any special event where a meal will be served.

With the decision of using place cards comes another decision yet to be made for the big day. What to use? Should I be crafty? Do I have the time? Or is it easier to print off a free place setting and personalize it. All over the internet are great ideas for place card settings. Now I just have to choose one that works for me.
