Frugal Living The Old Fashioned Way! Take Things Back to The Basics to Save Money!

< !DOCTYPE html>

Lots of times we make life crazy and complicated with our schedules and spending habits. Who wouldn’t love to go back to the “old fashioned” way of life and live more simple? I’ve put together ways you can save money by living in the past.

  • Make your bread from scratch – this is something I’ve grown to love the more I do it. I have a bread machine I use which makes it super simple but I do love baking it in the oven to. One tip I’ve learned is the bread is easier to slice once it’s sat in the fridge overnight.
  • Mend your own clothing – From putting a button back on to hemming up some pants this is a great way to save yourself from having to buy new clothing.
  • Cook from scratch – not always the easiest for me but I do find it’s a lot cheaper to create our meals from scratch.
  • Learn how to grow a garden – some years are better than others but it’s nice to enjoy the fruits of your labor when creating a garden.
  • Learn to can your garden – My mom was a great teacher and example to me when it comes to canning. There’s more I’d like to learn but the basics are easy, I know you can do it too.
  • Use cloth instead of paper towels/napkins – I’m not one to want to add more laundry but just to throw a couple extra napkins in the wash shouldn’t be too bad right?
  • Keep your paper to use as scratch – If you have kids like mine they’re always asking for paper to create different drawing and projects with. I have a pile of paper they are welcome to grab from with printing mess ups, scraps from other projects, etc.
  • Drink water instead of soda/juice – If you drink just 2 soda’s a day and say you buy them on sale for $.25 each you’re paying $3.50 a week in soda! That’s $182.50 a year for the 2 sodas a day!
  • Make your own cleaning supplies – I love using baking soda and vinegar to clean a lot of my house and I make my kids their own spray bottle with vinegar and lemon oil inside to clean the mirror, walls, counters and more with! It’s safe and super cheap!
  • Make your own laundry detergent – I’ll admit I’ve done this in the past but it became too much work for me and I haven’t in a while. But there’s some great recipes online you could try!
  • Cook dried beans – Purchase a bag of dried beans for super cheap. Then cook them in your crock pot or let them sit overnight. This will save you from purchasing the cans that can add up in cost.
  • Eat simple meals – don’t go Pinterest crazy with your meals. Sometimes the basics are less stressful and cost efficient.
  • Downsize to a smaller house – Be sure you do your research first. Right now with the market the way it is, it might not be a good time to downsize. But keep your options open and look into it.
  • Bake your own cakes – I never buy store bought cakes anymore! I’ll create ours from scratch and add cute cake toppers for the theme the kids have chosen.
  • Line dry your clothing – You can create a clothing line with just some string. Run the line across your fence or use the playset.
  • Try walking to your destinations – I can’t believe how much gas prices have gone up since I first started driving. But we live close enough my kids are able to walk to and from school. We could also easily walk to the bank and store. Although I don’t recommend this if you’ll have a lot of bags to bring home.
  • Find non-electronic hobbies – hobbies can get expensive but I find they’re essential. You need a way you can relax and reset after a long day. Try reading a few new books or exercise in your own home or outside for free.

Use your talents and create new ones by becoming more self-reliant. You don’t have to live on a farm without electricity to live the Old Fashioned way. But by simply changing a few of your habits you’ll be able to save money for you and your family.

How to Can Peaches! Become More Self-Sufficient With These Step By Step Instructions!

canningpeaches

Can you believe we’re headed into fall? This time of year is the perfect time for canning all your produce from the garden and off the trees. And right now the peaches are ripening and ready to store. Have you though of canning? It’s a great way to save money by becoming more self sufficient and it’s super easy. You can easily can applesauce, peaches, pears, salsa, jam and so much more.

If you’d like to learn more about canning I HIGHLY recommend this book called, “Putting Food By” and right now it’s marked down on Amazon to just $11.71! It has everything you need to know about canning from meats to fruit and veggies. But here’s some basic steps to get you started if you’d like to can some peaches.

Supplies you need:

  • peach
  • sterilized quart size jars (you can use the pint size jars if your family is smaller)
  • clean rings and NEW lids (lids cannot be reused)
  • sugar
  • Waterbath canner
  • jar grabber

Directions:

  • Start by cleaning your jars and rings. Then place them in your oven to keep warm so the lowest setting your oven can do is great (Mine is around 170 degrees) (This will help keep them from break when you put them in the water bath.)
  • Grab your waterbath canner and fill it with water. Than place it on the stove so it can start warming up. You want it boiling before you put your jars in.
  • Fill another large pot of water and bring to a boil as well. Once boiling add the peaches for 2-3 minutes (I use a cheese cloth to do this, it’s easier to pull them back out but you could simply get them out with a spoon as well.). You might need to do several batches but this process helps to remove the skin.
  • Remove the peaches and place them in COLD water. We add ice to our cold water to help the skin pill off easier. Remove the pit and slice into large pieces. (If they’re smaller peaches keeping them in half is just fine.)
  • Once sliced, place them in a bowl of water with a little lemon juice to keep them from browning.
  • Then when you have enough peaches peeled and ready, fill the jars
  • You’ll also need to make a simple syrup to add to the peaches. We go with the light syrup (they have other options in the book talked about above) by mixing 6 cups water to 3 cups sugar. Stir together until dissolved then add to the jars leaving about 1/2″ space at the top.
  • Wipe the rims of the jars and place a new lid on top (we get the lids warm by keeping them in a small amount of water on the stove or medium to low heat.) and screw on the rings.
  • Add your jars to the boiling hot waterbath. Once you have all your jars inside, lower them down and see if you need to add any more water (you want it at least 2 inch above the jars). Place the lids on top and bring the water back to a boil then set your timer for 25 minutes.
  • Place a few layers of newspaper down on your counters (or a towel) and wait for you jars to finish. Once they’re done you can remove the jars and place them on the newspaper to cool.

Then you’ll just want your jars to cool completely before you store them away to eat later! Just make sure they are sealed before hand by pressing on the center of the lid, you don’t want it to pop back out. If they don’t steel just place them into your fridge and eat them in the next few days. We also write the date on the top, that allows up to know when they were processed and also that the lid is used and cannot be used again.

We love to use our fresh peaches for peach cobbler! Nothing beats it! We’ll also eat them just plain or on top of our cottage cheese in the morning. What do you do with your canned peaches? Do you can other things this time of year?

A PYP Best Blog! How to Can Peaches the Easy Way!

Just in case you missed this article on how to can peaches the easy way the first time we shared it a couple of years ago, we are republishing it. After Marne wrote this blog originally, we got an awesome response. This is one of the PYP Best Blogs!

It is almost canning season! And peach season too. I love canning peaches. There is more than one way to can peaches. I grew up canning peaches using this method, and I still can this way myself. It is traditionally called the ‘cold pack’ method, but also called the no-syrup method too. I wanted to share it with you today, I really enjoy canning my peaches this way. Easy, not a lot of mess (no sticky!) and fast. Plus, I think it is a little healthier as I am not cooking my peaches in heavy sugar syrup.

1. Gather your peaches. I blanche my peaches for about 20-25 seconds to loosen the skin. I use a blancher and can do about 8 peaches at a time. Fill a sink full of cold water, then put the peaches in the sink to cool off. The skins just slide off, its so simple this way!

2. When you have a sink full of blanched peaches, begin slipping the skins off and cutting them in half. Put the cut halves in a large bowl. When a have a good amount in the bowl, I start filling my jars with the peach halves. (I have previously washed and sterilized my jars in the dishwasher prior to this step). Leave about 1.5 inches of space at the top.

3. After you have packed your jar full of peaches, put in 1 tsp. Ball Fruit Fresh (keeps them from turning brown) and as much sugar as you like in your canned peaches. I don’t use a lot of sugar in ours, I usually put in about 1-2 Tbl., depending on the sweetness of the peach. Just put those right on top of the peaches in each jar.

4. Take HOT water and using a pitcher or other pouring device, pour the hot water into each canning jar, up to about 1 inch head space. The hot water will dissolve the fruit fresh and sugar and fill in all the areas around the peaches. Once you fill the jars, wipe off the mouth of the jar WELL, making sure there is nothing on it. Put hot canning lids (that have been sitting in HOT water on the stove all this time) on each jar, and finish with a ring.

5. Put into a water bath canner for about 25 minutes (check your elevation for correct canning times). Remove and let sit for 24 hours before testing if the jar sealed. Now you can be proud of your hard work!

Once you get a system down it is easy for just one person, but if you are just beginning you might want someone to can with you. One person can be blanching and cutting while the other is packing. Makes it fun too!

Saving Money With Canning

Homemade PreservesBack in the olden days, only the very rich had refrigerators, and people had to do things in order to keep food as long as they could. The only real way they had to preserve food was to can it, and then they could store the food in their basements or cellars for a very long time, maybe even years. However, canning became something people do not do too often when refrigerators became more affordable, but believe it or not some people still can food, and it can actually save money for the following reasons.

#1. End of season canning supplies are very cheap.

The typical canning season is the spring and summer, and when the fall comes, no one cans anymore so stores have their canning supplies reduced significantly just to get rid of them. People can go and pick up the supplies for practically nothing, and people can really can things all year long if they want to.

#2. Find the best deals on fruits and vegetables.

While spring and summer is the best time for a lot of different produce, and this is also the time for it to go on sale as well. However, people need to remember that groceries stores are not the only option when it comes to finding fruits and vegetables. During the spring and summer, there are farmers markets that are available on the weekends.

These markets can offer fruit and vegetables for prices a lot lower than a national chain of super markets. Also, people should consider buying from these local markets because it supports local growers who sell what they grow in order to care for their families and pay their bills.

#3. Meat can also be canned.

People may not know this, but other things can be canned other than fruits and vegetables. Meat may seem like an unusual thing to can, but it can be done. Beef, pork, and chicken can be canned as long as it is done properly and a pressure cooker is used.  To make canning easier, some canners like to make meals that they can like stews and soups, which will keep for a lot longer as long as it is done properly.

#4. Consider growing your own vegetables.

The summer means that produce is on sale, and also the seeds and seedlings that people plant in their gardens to grow their own vegetables are also available to buy. If people do not want to deal with spending money on vegetables, then they can easily grow their own, and when it comes to canning, all they need to do is go outside and pick what they want to can.

#5. Canned fruits and vegetables can also be sold.

Some people really love the taste of canned peaches, canned beets, and even canned corn, and when they find out that people are still canning, they may be willing to pay for jars of canned fruits, vegetables, and meat. People with the skills and talent to can things can make a little money on the side, which will really help them financially.
